Les Cavaliers is the last beach at the north end of Anglet's chain, right where the Adour comes out into the Atlantic, and it is a Basque wave spot first and a kite spot a distant second. The swell is powerful and the rips are strong, worst near the river mouth and in the low-tide channels.
Kitesurfing is legal here only from 1 November through 31 May under the 2026 municipal rules; from June to October the beach belongs to the bathing season, with only surf-foil and SUP-foil allowed, and those only 06:00-09:30. That window is also the windy one, November through March, with W and NW off the ocean, reportedly averaging around 23.8 knots, though no local source has confirmed the figure.
There are no lifeguards at all while kiting is legal: Anglet's guards work mid-June to mid-September. You share the water with the biggest surf club in France, 1,200-plus members, and the lineup expects wave priority.
Which direction is best is disputed (NW and W against NE and E side-shore) and so is the level; come self-sufficient and treat it as advanced.

Kitesurfing is legal at Les Cavaliers only from 1 November to 31 May (a bathing-season closure, see rules). That lines up with the windiest months, November to March, so the legal season and the good season are the same months.

Direction to shore

The beach faces due west into the open Atlantic. The dominant W and NW arrive straight onshore, so the shorebreak and the surf lineup are what stand between you and clean water. N runs side-shore down the sand and SW comes side-on from the southern end.E and NE blow off the land, over the pine forest and the dune, and turn broken and offshore; they are usually treated as unfavourable on this stretch of Anglet, although the opposite reading, NE and E as the ideal side-shore, is also in circulation (see contradictions).

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow and walkable at low tide; deeper wave-riding water at high tide

Tides

Semi-diurnal Atlantic tide with a real effect: low to mid tide is the walkable, more kiteable state, high tide is deeper wave water. The tidal range in metres has not been sourced.

Temperature

Summer 19-23 (peaks around 22-23 in August)

Winter 12-14 (coldest around February)

Wetsuit

Year-round on this coast: roughly 4/3 mm with boots and a hood in winter (water about 12 C), 3/2 mm down to a shorty in summer (water about 21-23 C).

Currents

Strong rip currents, worse near the Adour river mouth and near tidal channels at low tide

A surf lineup first: Anglet has France's largest surf club (1,200+ members) and has hosted the Quiksilver Air Show and the O'Neill Pro; kites are only legal in the off-season, when the bathers are gone.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

There is a permanent lifeguard post on the Cavaliers sand, rebuilt with a raised watch deck for the 2026 season that gives the crew a 180-degree view over Cavaliers, Ocean, Dunes and La Barre at once and a 4x4 they send along the beach when a neighbouring post shuts.
It is staffed only from 13 June to 13 September, the stretch of the year when kiting here is banned. Through the legal kite window, November to May, nobody is watching the water. For a sea emergency dial 196 from a mobile, or call on VHF channel 16 if you carry a radio; both reach the regional rescue coordination centre.

Launch

Launch from the Cavaliers sand only in the legal window (see rules), and not in the middle of the surfers: use the far north or far south end of the beach.

  • Heavy surf crowd
  • Adour-mouth conditions
  • Strong rip currents, worse near the Adour river mouth and at low-tide channels
  • Extremely crowded surf lineup; strict wave-priority etiquette.
  • No lifeguard cover during the legally kiteable season: Anglet's lifeguards operate mid-June to mid-September, exactly the window when kitesurf itself is banned here
Rules & access
2026: kitesurf is allowed on Anglet's beaches, Les Cavaliers included, only outside the bathing season, 1 November to 31 May. From 1 June to 31 October only surf-foil and stand-up-paddle-foil are permitted at Les Cavaliers, and only 06:00-09:30; no kitesurf in that period. Lifeguards cover Les Cavaliers in 2026 from 13 June to 13 September (12:00-18:00 from 13 June to 5 July, 10:30-19:00 from 6 July to 30 August, 12:00-18:00 again from 31 August to 13 September), a window with no overlap with the legal kite season.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Kite here only between 1 November and 31 May; from June to October the 2026 rules allow surf-foil and SUP-foil alone, and only 06:00-09:30.
  • Go at low to mid tide for walkable shallows; the rips run hardest through the channels at low water and near the Adour mouth, so know where they are before you launch.
  • Nobody is watching you from November to May; the lifeguard season is 13 June to 13 September. Have your own rescue plan and a mate on the beach.
  • Launch at the far north or far south end of the sand, away from the surf lineup, and give surfers wave priority; the club has 1,200-plus members and they were here first.
  • Bring a 4/3 with boots and a hood: the water is around 12 C in the kite season.
