When it fills in
No daily clock. The useful wind here is frontal, so it can be up at first light, hold through the night and run for days; the pressure pattern decides the session, not the hour. Warm settled summer weather is the exception, when a sea breeze adds to a weak gradient through the afternoon and fades in the evening. That breeze is left out of the local wind-day counts, which still put July and August at 8-9 kt on average, so a summer afternoon can be rideable on a day the statistics call calm.

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water
Type
open Baltic Sea beach, chop and small to medium waves; larger waves on strong W-SW-NW wind
Standing depth
Relatively shallow sandy seabed is reported for the Palanga-area kite beaches north of town, but the exact standing-depth range is unconfirmed.
Tides
Effectively tide independent; Baltic tide range is small, and Palanga is listed as tide-independent for riding.
Temperature
17.6°C summer · 4.1°C winter
Wetsuit
Wetsuit needed year-round for kiting; shorty may be enough on warm summer days, but winter requires thick neoprene and often drysuit-level protection.
Currents
Baltic Sea waves and current can pull a rider sideways, much more than on the flat Svencelė lagoon.

Rider tips
- Move off the central pier and Basanavičiaus street stretch for quieter rigging and launching space in peak season.
- Navigate to Kunigiškės, Monciškės or another designated extreme-sports zone rather than to the word Palanga.
- Skip easterly offshore days on this west-facing coast unless a local school has a supervised plan.
- In July and August launch well away from bathers, and only where municipal zoning permits extreme sports.
- Take your first waterstarts to Svencelė or another Curonian Lagoon spot if the Baltic waves are too much.
- Check the Palanga forecast before you drive out.
