The spot

Šventoji sits at the top of Palanga municipality, close to the Latvian border, and the kite wave spot is the one listed as Sventoji/Jaws Rivermouth or Akinio nasrai: waves by the old wooden bridge, wide beach on either side.

Wind and waves

It works in north, northwest, west, southwest and south wind. The big days arrive with southwest storm systems, when waves reach up to 6 m; the shorebreak stays mild but the bottom is soft sand and it reshapes after every blow, so the bank you rode in June may not be there in September.

Water and seasons

Water is 18 C in summer and 4 C in winter, so a wetsuit is never optional here and winter wants a drysuit. Come between April and October; July and August bring the resort crowd onto the sand with you.

Monthly averages run from 8 kt in July-August to 17 kt in January, with 9-10 kt in April-June and September. The year holds around 276 days with at least 12 knots (4 Bft), strongest in winter, lightest in summer.

Typical strength

12-30 kt is the working range at neighbouring Monciškės. In deep cyclones, southwest storm wind at Šventoji reportedly reaches 30 m/s.

Open Baltic exposure, and the storms do the heavy lifting. The best wave setups come in with southwest wind behind North Atlantic cyclones.

April through October is the riding season in Palanga, set by water temperature more than by wind. The windiest months are the cold ones: January to March and November to December each run roughly 25-29 days with usable wind, against a thinner and less reliable summer.

Spring and autumn are where the two curves meet, and that is when most people come.

Palanga municipality legalised the boundaries and functional zones of its beaches, Šventoji included, by council decision No. T2-216 of 22 December 2021. The bathing areas inside them were fixed by administration order No. A1-174 of 8 February 2022.

Kite zone

A functional active-leisure zone for extreme water sports was then established on the southern Šventoji beach by administration order No. A1-679 of 4 May 2022, and that zone is the designated area for board sports here. Stay out of the marked bathing water and check the municipal beach map before you rig.

Permits

Nothing was found requiring a permit or club membership to kite in 2026.

Rider tips

Walk the beach by the old wooden bridge before you rig: the sandbars move after every storm and the peak moves with them.
Book lessons and rent gear at Monciškės, not here. Jaws is a wave launch with nothing on it.
Check the red flags and the swimmer zones before you pump in July and August.
Bring a wetsuit whatever the month, and a drysuit if you are riding in winter.
