Pissouri Bay sits below Pissouri village on the south coast of Cyprus, between Paphos and Limassol, and the bay itself is enclosed: flat water and chop inside, bigger swell and more wind once you ride out of it.
The wind is the afternoon thermal from the W, about 16 kt (Force 4) when it works, cross-shore to cross-onshore depending on where in the bay you launch. The season is Easter/April to early November; April, then August and September, are the windiest months, and that comes from the windsurf record because there is no detailed kite record.
Beginners and foilers stay inside near the beach. What nobody has written down is where an independent kiter may rig: the reference points are the bay beach and the kite-foil school near Pissouri Bay, some Cyprus beaches close to kites in summer, and no Pissouri bylaw has turned up (2026).
Water is 28 C in summer and 17 C in winter: shorts in summer, a shorty or light full suit in April and the winter months. It is a quiet resort bay, busy only in July and August, and Paphos Airport is the near one, about 20 minutes.

Typical strength

steady
Easter/April to early November is the working window. The south-coast thermal builds through the day, so mornings inside the bay are light and flat and the afternoon carries the wind; April, then August and September, are the windiest months, and that ranking comes from the windsurf record because no kite record exists for the bay.
Summer wind is constant when it is in, but the summer bathing season closes public beaches to kites.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, derived from the wind range because no local kite log is published: 12 m for the ordinary 16 kt afternoon, 10 m once the thermal is fully up, 14 m or a foil for the light middle of the morning.

Direction to shore

cross-shore to cross-onshore depending on exact launch inside the bay

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Effectively tideless. High water along this coast runs about 0.25-0.35 m and low water about 0.05-0.10 m, a range of roughly a quarter of a metre, so the tide changes neither the launch nor the water state. Measured at the Limassol gauge, 30 km east; there is no Pissouri gauge.

Temperature

28°C summer · 17°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer: rash vest/shorts or no wetsuit; April/winter: shorty or light full suit depending on wind chill.

Enclosed, protected bay: flat water and chop inside, bigger swell and more wind outside.

Your level

Beginners stay inside the protected bay. Farther out the wind is stronger and the waves bigger; that is the advanced riders' water.

Hazards riders report 8

  • Some beaches in the area close to kitesurfing in summer; ask locally which launch is allowed.
  • Some Cyprus beaches are closed to kitesurfing in summer; confirm the current permitted launch locally.
  • Stronger wind and bigger waves/swell outside the protected bay.
  • Thermal afternoons can be windier than mornings.
  • Public beaches close to kites during the Cyprus summer bathing season; confirm the permitted launch locally before rigging.
  • Stronger wind and bigger swell as soon as you ride out of the protected bay.
  • The thermal keeps building through the day, so what you rigged at midday can be too much by late afternoon.
  • A small bay full of swimmers and rental craft in July and August.
Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing is not allowed from Cyprus public bathing beaches during the summer season, so riding is meant to happen in designated kite areas. No designated zone has been published for Pissouri Bay itself and no Pissouri bylaw has been found, which leaves the permitted launch a local question: ask the bay's watersports base or the kite-foil school before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask Pissouri Bay Watersports or the kite-foil school where kites may rig before you pump up; the permitted zone is not published and some Cyprus beaches ban kites in summer.
  • Plan on the afternoon: the W thermal builds after lunch and the mornings are lighter.
  • Learning or foiling, stay inside the bay; go out only when you are happy with more wind and swell.
  • Pack a shorty for April and winter sessions; summer is shorts, with the water around 28 C.
  • Rig for the end of the session, not the start. The wind climbs all afternoon, so the size that felt right at two o'clock is often one too big by five.
