On the clock

09:00 · 17:00

Two clocks. Tramuntana is synoptic and can blow at any hour, through the night and for days at a time. The summer sea breeze starts mid-morning, is established roughly 09:00 to 17:00 with its peak after midday, and fades at dark. Regional pattern for this coast, not a measurement at Pals.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Pals works when the Tramuntana is howling somewhere north of here. It is a long sandy beach on the Costa Brava south of the Bay of Roses, split into Platja del Grau, which is shallower, and Platja Gran, which is deeper.
Tramuntana comes from the N, cross-shore from the left, and can build big clean waves; SE Xaloc is the nicest setup, SW Garbi is cross-off from the right and gusty, and onshore Levante is not worth rigging for. On the strong days the gusts run about 10 knots less than Leucate and people rig 6-7 m.
Launch by the red-and-white antennae. Beginner access is rated 2/5 with intermediate to advanced as the level asked for, so a strong Tramuntana day is a wave and high-wind session, not a place to learn.
Lifeguards and safety equipment are there from 15 June to 30 September, which is also when the beach fills with families and the dunes are cordoned. February to April is the Tramuntana window; May to September is the easier season.

Typical strength

Two different winds, two different numbers. The everyday summer sea breeze sits around 4-14 kt and rarely gives more. The days people drive here for are Tramuntana, strong enough that riders rig 6-7 m, so roughly 25-30 kt, with gusts running about 10 kt under whatever Leucate is showing the same afternoon. Indicative: there is no wind station on this beach.

Often variable; Pals works when Tramuntana is very strong farther north, with about 10 knots less in gusts than Leucate.
May to September is the best period, with April through October also workable. February to April is the strongest Tramuntana stretch.

Standing depth

Platja del Grau is shallow, Platja Gran is deeper, so standing depth varies by sector.

Tides

Kitesurfing conditions are reported as not tide-dependent.

Temperature

24°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer can be shorts/shorty conditions; spring and autumn need a shorty or long-leg suit, and winter needs a full wetsuit.

Long sandy beach divided mainly into Platja del Grau and Platja Gran, with dunes, wetlands and reeds of ecological value. Chop and small waves are typical in normal conditions, with bigger waves during strong Tramuntana.

Ratings conflict: any level in one place, beginner access 2/5 and intermediate to advanced required in another. Strong Tramuntana and waves make beginner suitability conditional at best.

Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing at Platja de Pals is limited during the peak bathing season, between 1 June and 30 September, while the other watersports run year-round; the published wording does not say what the limit is in practice, so ask the town hall or the club at Platja del Grau before a summer session. Swimming areas are buoy-marked and there are marked buoyed channels for launching and landing craft on Platja Gran and Platja del Grau. Dune sections are cordoned and are not to be crossed. Lifeguards and safety equipment are on the beach from 15 June to 30 September.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check that your launch sits clear of the buoyed swimming area and the signed vessel access before you rig.
  • Rig 6-7 m on a strong Tramuntana day and save the lessons for a light sea breeze.
  • Cross to the water on the open sand; the dune sections are cordoned.
  • Expect the beach full in June, July and August, and set up well away from the swimming buoys.

Getting there
