Costacabana is Almeria's city kite spot, east of the centre and a 5 minute drive from the airport. Levante is what it is known for: side-shore from the east, over choppy but clear water, and strong enough on the good days that riders come across from Tarifa for it.
Poniente is rideable too, though most people drive up to Retamar when it blows. The beach is urban, 1,200 m long and about 30 m of gravel and sand instead of soft sand, with stone jetties that knock the wave down and give you something to stay away from.
The reason the spot matters is the launch and exit channel, which keeps kiting legal through the summer bathing season when other Almeria beaches close. Average wind sits at 19.9 knots with a working range of 15-25, so 8-9 m on the hard days and 12-13 m when it goes soft.
This is not a beginner beach: the pebbles, the stone jetties and the side-shore drift punish anyone who cannot hold their ground upwind. Best months are February to June and September, and the current official 2026 wording of the channel rule was not found, so check where it sits before you rig.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

sea

Standing depth

You can stand at both high and low tide near the shore, and the entry is easy, but the bottom is mixed: gravel and stones at the water's edge, sand through the middle, rock and jetty boulders on the flanks. Booties are the sensible call. No measured depth range.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

24.4°C summer · 14.5°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty in summer, a wetsuit in the shoulder months. Winter needs a full suit, inferred from Almeria February sea temperatures rather than confirmed on the beach.

Currents

Low natural drift most days. What moves you is the side-shore Levante pushing you down the beach past the stone jetties rather than any set current. Strong Poniente brings the messier sea: in June 2020 a rider here lost his kite in one and was left hanging onto his board offshore until he could get himself back in.

16–28°C water
Choppy Mediterranean water, clear on most days. Costacabana is an urban beach, 1,200 m long and about 30 m of gravel and sand, with moderate surf and enough wind that bathing is rarely the point.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate and up. The pebble launch, the stone jetties and side-shore Levante make it a bad place to learn without a school.

Rescue

Municipal beach-plan lifeguards, nothing more. Costacabana is one of the staffed city beaches: daily 12:00 to 20:00 through the summer season, then weekends only from 4 September to 1 October, 12:00 to 19:00, with around 40 rescue staff shared across the busiest beaches, plus Local Police and Civil Protection.
Off-season, out of hours, or once you are well offshore it is 112 and Salvamento Maritimo, which sent a helicopter to the June 2020 kite incident here after people onshore raised the alarm.

Launch

Wide gravel and sand beach with a designated launch and exit channel. Public access and parking are reported around Avenida La Marinera.

Rules & access
2026: the municipal beach plan covers the 13 city beaches, Costacabana included, funding lifeguards, Local Police, Civil Protection, cleaning, water signage and nautical channels. The launch and exit channel is what keeps kiting possible here in summer when other Almeria beaches close to it. Lifeguard cover is daily 12:00 to 20:00 in the summer season, then weekends only from 4 September to 1 October, 12:00 to 19:00. The kite-specific municipal text and the channel's official position were not found, so confirm where it is marked before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Wear booties or protect your feet; the launch is gravel and pebble, not sand.
  • Stay inside the marked channel on Levante days, because it is side-shore and the drift is what catches people who wander out of it.
  • Ask YourTime or the riders on the beach where the channel sits this season instead of assuming last year's layout.
  • In June to September the access and parking around Avenida La Marinera fill up; get there early.
  • Pack 8-9 m, 10-11 m and 12-13 m if you want to cover the 15-25 knot range.
