When it fills in

Poniente is a pressure-gradient wind rather than a sea breeze, so it is up at whatever hour the gradient sets and generally holds through the day instead of filling in on a clock. No onset pattern specific to this launch has been documented.

Almerimar works with poniente, the west wind on the El Ejido coast, and Almeria wind generally sits in the 18-35 knot band depending on direction. Playa de Poniente is a serviced residential beach: calm water most days, coarse sand, medium-high occupancy, and on windy days it is the local reference for surf and windsurf.
Club Kite Surf activity is documented at Playa Poniente Almerimar, so the launch is a working club beach rather than a directory entry. The season problem is blunt.
Kitesurfing is not allowed from 15 June to 15 September, which removes the whole summer, and the municipal beach layout includes balizamiento and a nautical channel that can move from year to year. Come in spring or autumn, and read the buoying on the sand before you rig.
Nobody has published a station average for the launch itself, so the knot range is a regional figure rather than a local one.

Typical strength

18-35 knots is the figure quoted for the Almeria coast as a whole, not for this beach. The nearest working station, on the cape 7 km east, averages 8 knots over the year: monthly means run 7.1-10.3 knots, and readings reach 11 knots or more on about 39 percent of March observations and 38 percent in April, against 17-18 percent in July, October, December and January. Read it as a spring coast where a 30-knot day is the exception. Indicative for the launch, since the station on the beach itself stopped reporting in 2017.

Almeria wind usually lasts all day, and Almerimar is sailed with poniente. No station average was found for the launch.
Poniente is the working wind. March and April are the windiest months on this coast and July through October the thinnest, with November picking up again to roughly a third of readings above 11 knots. The summer restriction, 15 June to 15 September, removes the tail of the spring window and the whole hot season.
Monthly figures come from the cape station 7 km east, not from the beach.

The quiver, in words

No local size table exists. Against the 18-35 knot band quoted for this coast an 80 kg rider is on 9-12 m at the bottom of it and 7-9 m once it is properly on, and closer to 12 m on an average spring day when the station reads in the teens.Indicative, derived from the published wind range rather than measured at the launch.

Direction to shore

Playa de Poniente faces south. A west poniente comes in side-shore along the sand, an east levante side-shore the other way, and a south wind is straight onshore. North has the greenhouse plain behind it and blows offshore.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

  • Occasional jellyfish
Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing at Almerimar is reported to be off from 15 June to 15 September, but no El Ejido municipal ordinance confirming those dates could be found - the published index of municipal ordinances carries nothing on beaches at all - so treat the window as unconfirmed and ask a local school or the club before booking around it. The beach also carries balizamiento marking the swimming zone and a nautical channel for craft, both of which can be laid out differently from year to year; read the buoys on the sand before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Plan the trip outside 15 June to 15 September; kitesurfing is off in that window.
  • Treat summer as a rule check: confirm the current balizamiento and whether a nautical channel is open before rigging.
  • Poniente is the working wind. Walk away if it is gusty, the beach is full, or the angle pushes toward the swimmers.
  • Ask a local school or the club for the exact Playa Poniente rigging point; the beach is broad and fully serviced, and the kite end is not obvious.
  • March and April are the season. They carry roughly twice the share of days above 11 knots that July to October do.
  • The beach runs about 1,950 m with dunes at either end, so the walk from the nearest parking to the kite end is part of the plan.
