On the clock

14:00 · 19:00

The thermal switches on around 14:00 and is done by about 19:00, so the morning is not worth rigging for. It needs high pressure, a clear sky and at least a trace of W-SW base breeze; without those it does not build at all.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Salto di Fondi sits on the Via Flacca between Terracina and Sperlonga, and what it is known for in Lazio is the summer thermal: the mountains behind the coast help a W-SW Ponente or Libeccio fill in on high-pressure days, from about 12 knots up. The bottom is sand.
The first 50 m by the canal and the breakwater are very flat, then it goes calm to choppy farther out, and past roughly 20 knots the chop is real. Rocks sit close to the two moles, so know where your ends are.
Beginners can learn here and the schools along this stretch run courses, but the constraint is legal rather than technical: the 2025 Gaeta safety ordinance bans kitesurf inside the bathing zone during the season except through an authorized launch corridor, and in 2026 riders were fined on the Fondi coast for riding in water reserved for bathers.
Quoted seasons do not agree, running from March-September and November at one end to a May-October school window, with June-August the core nobody argues with.

Typical strength

12+ knots on good thermal days; chop reported over 20 knots.

A reliable summer thermal on high pressure with a Ponente-Libeccio base. Frontal wind comes through as well.
Quoted windows disagree: May to the first week of August, May-October for the school season, and March-September plus November all appear. June-August is the core nobody argues with. What the thermal actually depends on is high pressure, clear sky and a W-SW base wind.

thermal

The quiver, in words

A 12 m and a 9 m are the pair quoted for the spot, and they are the right pair for a 75-85 kg rider: the 12 for the fill-in and the softer afternoons, the 9 once the thermal has settled. The quoted sizes are not tied to a stated rider weight.

Direction to shore

Side-on. The W to SW thermal crosses the beach at an angle rather than blowing straight in or straight off.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

KSF keeps a rescue dinghy and a marked launch corridor. Il Tucano, another beach club on this stretch, also has a dinghy for pick-ups, plus showers and a rinse tap. Free Surf Point's own rescue arrangements are unconfirmed.

Launch

Sandy beach along Via Flacca in the Salto di Fondi / Sant'Anastasia stretch, by the ESSO station. KSF works from the La Lucciola beach club with a marked launch corridor and parking; Free Surf Point sits by the canal and the breakwater; Il Tucano is a third beach club on the same stretch. The two moles stand about 250 m apart and the only rocks are next to them.

Rules & access
2025 Guardia Costiera Gaeta Ordinanza di Sicurezza Balneare n. 25/2025 bans kitesurf inside the bathing zone during the bathing season except through an authorized launch corridor: the Circondario di Gaeta corridor standard is at least 30 m wide at the beach, widening to 80 m at 100 m from shore, buoy-marked out to 250 m, one kite at a time through the first 100 m with priority given to riders returning to shore, no maneuvering in the transit lane, and open kiting only beyond 500 m from shore; 2026 local news reported sanctions for kitesurfing in areas reserved for bathers on the Fondi coast.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Park at KSF on Via Flacca near km 2950 by the ESSO; parking is on the spot.
  • Ride the first 50 m off the canal and breakwater for flat water; it turns choppy farther out and above about 20 knots.
  • For a first session, use a school with a corridor and a rescue dinghy instead of launching alone beside bathers.
  • Check the active bathing-season corridor before rigging: one kite at a time through the first 100 m, priority to riders coming back in, and open riding only beyond 500 m from shore.
  • Keep clear of the two moles, where the rocks are.
  • The thermal comes in around 14:00 and dies around 19:00. No high pressure and no clear sky means no wind, whatever the forecast pretends.
  • Addresses for the school on Via Flacca vary between km 2900 and km 2950; navigate to the ESSO station and the beach clubs beside it.
