On the clock

13:30 · 15:30

Thermal reinforcement can start around 13:30 to 15:30.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Campo di Mare is a Cerveteri and Ladispoli beach that several Rome-area schools work off, and its one real asset is a Ponente thermal that adds 6-8 knots over the base wind in spring, June and July.
It fills in somewhere between 13:30 and 15:30, which means a forecast of 8-10 knots can turn into a session if you sit and wait. Ponente, Maestrale, Scirocco, Sud, Libeccio: all of them work here, and only Tramontana kills it.
The water stays close to calm up to about 16-18 knots and goes choppy above that, with small waves standing up on the first sandbar. The sand is dark and iron-rich and it gets brutally hot in summer, so do not cross it barefoot.
Come in spring or early summer for the thermal; in high summer you are sharing the beach with bathers.

Character

fills in: Thermal reinforcement can start around 13:30 to 15:30.

Typical strength

Thermal can add 6-8 knots over a weak Ponente base; one documented session forecast 8-10 knots and measured 16 knots.

Good Rome-area thermal spot in high pressure when nearby beaches remain too light; choppy once wind exceeds about 16-18 knots.
Spring, June and July are the months for the Ponente thermal. West winds run on this litorale from April to October.

Thermal or synoptic

Also on record

4 knots annual average at the Marina di Cerveteri weather station, based on 2013-2019 observations; this is climate/statistical wind, not kitable-session wind.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 14-15 m to ride the light phase before the thermal adds its 6-8 knots, 12 m through the 14-16 knot build, 9-10 m once it settles at 18 knots and above. Indicative, derived from the wind figures recorded here; no local size chart is published.

Direction to shore

W and WNW are generally side to side-on on this coast; the spot works with almost all winds except Tramontana.

Dominant direction

Thermal W Ponente in spring and early summer, with NW, SE, S and SW synoptic winds also reported usable.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Low sandy bottom/secca close enough to shape small waves; exact standing-depth distance unconfirmed.

Tides

Nothing to plan around. This coast is microtidal, with 10-20 cm between high and low water and rarely more than 30, so the first sandbar and the depth over it do not change through the day. Regional figure; there is no gauge at the beach.

Temperature

25°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or shorty in summer; full wetsuit in winter and shoulder-season cold fronts.

15–27°C water
Wide dark-sand Tyrrhenian beach. The water stays almost calm up to about 16-18 knots and turns choppy above that; a spring thermal day was reported as flat water with small waves on the first sandbar.

Rescue

No kite rescue boat. From early June in the 2026 season the municipality runs a beach safety scheme at Campo di Mare with observation towers and bathing assistants covering surveillance and rescue through the summer; outside those months and outside their hours there is nothing on the sand.
On a strong day the schools working the stretch are the practical cover.

Launch

Wide dark-sand beach between Marina di Cerveteri and Ladispoli, with the school activity around Lungomare dei Navigatori Etruschi. The dedicated kite area named after Gianluca Pennacchi was moved north along this coast from the Torre Flavia marsh end to near the mouth of the Zambra stream; for the 2026 season the council marked out a launch space on the sand and put a corridor through the water in front of it.

Hazards riders report 9

  • very hot dark sand in summer
  • chop when wind exceeds about 16-18 knots
  • the dark sand gets very hot in summer
  • chop above about 16-18 knots
  • Summer bathers outside dedicated/authorized kite area
  • Strong surf/frangenti on rough days
  • the dark iron-rich sand gets brutally hot in summer - do not cross it barefoot
  • During bathing hours the marked corridor is the only legal way out through the swimming zone
  • Rescue cover on the beach exists only in the summer season and only during staffed hours
Rules & access
The 2026 Cerveteri bathing season runs from the third Saturday of May to the third Sunday of September, 16 May to 20 September 2026. The municipal bathing ordinance signed on 15 May 2026 sets a reserved kitesurf area with transit prohibited inside it and requires the launch corridor to be marked out to the coast guard's bathing safety ordinance; kitesurf, windsurf and surf launching or transiting inside the bathing zone during bathing hours is otherwise restricted, and kitesurfing is subject to the authorisations the regulations require.
Bathing is prohibited inside the kite area. Boats may not be left moored in the water except rescue craft, and umbrellas, loungers and tents may not be left on the beach after sunset.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • On a high-pressure Ponente day, do not write the spot off before 13:30; the thermal is the reason you came.
  • Bring shoes for the dark sand in summer.
  • Check the school and corridor setup before launching between the third Saturday of May and the third Sunday of September.
  • Expect chop once the wind pushes past 16-18 knots, and flat water only below it.
  • Drive from Rome or Fiumicino on the A12 and the Aurelia, then out to Lungomare dei Navigatori Etruschi.
  • The marked kite area sits at the north end of the stretch, near the mouth of the Zambra; rig there rather than wherever you first hit the sand.
  • The thermal needs high pressure, clear sky, an existing Ponente base and no southerly component in the day; miss one and it does not turn up.
