On the clock

11:00 · 14:00 · 17:00 · 18:00 · 20:00

From May to September it behaves as a thermal: light until mid-morning, filling from about 11:00, strongest between 14:00 and 17:00, easing from 18:00 and largely gone by 20:00. The Scirocco and Ostro days of spring and autumn are synoptic and can blow through the night with only a small afternoon lift, so an early start is worth it out of season.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Sant'Agostino sits on the Lazio coast between Tarquinia and Civitavecchia, and the kite spot is the Mignone river mouth, not the whole bathing beach. The bottom there is sand and the water stays shallow, which is why people use it to practise water relaunch.
Scirocco from SE and Ostro from S are the directions to wait for; SE is the gusty one. The season runs April to November and is best in spring and fall: April, May, June, September, October, November. Summer puts tourists all over the sand, though the beach north of the channel stays empty even when the main bay is packed.
Away from the river mouth the seabed of the wider bathing stretch is mostly rock, so the beginner-friendly reading applies to the Mignone patch and nowhere else. Currents at the mouth after rain, rescue cover and the legal summer access are all unconfirmed.

Typical strength

Sessions here sit in a 12-18 kt band, with the harder Scirocco and Ostro afternoons pushing 18-25 kt. Modelled from ten years of hourly wind for this stretch of coast rather than a beach anemometer: afternoon hours (14:00-20:00) reach 12 kt about 29% of the time in March, 23-26% from November to February, and only 13-16% from June to September. Hours over 18 kt are rare in summer, under 2%.

It can blow harder here than at the other Lazio spots on a day when everywhere else is soft, and SE is reportedly the gusty direction. A thermal component is classified at the spot as well.
April to November is the normal season, best in spring and fall: April, May, June, September, October, November. Scirocco from SE and Ostro from S are the setups that make the Mignone mouth work.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider on a twintip: 12-14 m on the light summer thermal, 10-12 m on a normal 15-18 kt day, 8-9 m when Scirocco or Ostro is properly up at 20-25 kt. Indicative sizing read off the wind band, not from a local kit list. On gusty SE days take the smaller of two options.

Direction to shore

Scirocco (SE) arrives side-onshore and gusty at the Mignone-mouth launch. Ostro (S) is steadier but pushes rougher water onto the beach, closer to onshore. SW, W, WNW, NW: no confirmed shore angle at this exact launch.

Dominant direction

N, NNE, NE, ENE, E on the wider records; at the launch itself SE and S get the emphasis, with SW and W also named.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Wetsuit

The season normally runs April-November: a wetsuit off season, a shorty or even shorts in high summer. Tarquinia sea temperature averages 25.7 C in August and 15.1 C in winter.

Rescue

No kite-specific rescue and no confirmed lifeguard post at the Mignone mouth. Lifeguard cover on this coast belongs to the bathing season and the manned concessions, so an independent rider should plan to self-rescue and to walk kit back along the beach.

  • shorebreak with southerly sea state

Rules & access
2026: no ordinance naming kitesurfing at the Mignone mouth could be obtained. Tarquinia's municipal beach classification does list free beaches equipped with launch channels (canali di lancio) among its categories, in the 2020 beach ordinance, without saying where they are. Read the beach signage and the current season's ordinance before rigging between June and September, when the bathing rules apply.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig at the Mignone mouth only after looking at who is in the water and reading the signage.
  • Do not assume the rest of the Sant'Agostino shoreline is sand; away from the river mouth the seabed is mostly rock.
  • Take the SE and S days and expect gusts when it is Scirocco.
  • Keep off the beach at peak bathing hours in summer unless a kite corridor is clearly authorized.
  • In summer come for the afternoon: the thermal fills after about 11:00, peaks between 14:00 and 17:00 and is finished by 20:00.
  • The windiest afternoons of the year are in winter and early spring, not in the pleasant months; November to March roughly doubles the chance of a 12 kt afternoon compared with July.
