Marina di San Nicola sits on the sandy Tyrrhenian coast north of Rome, and it works on Ponente. West wind, side to side-on, typically 12-18 knots, and that is the day to come for. Libeccio from the SW and Scirocco from the SE also work.
Maestrale is side to side-off and gusty, and not worth the risk on this beach. Normal water is chop and small waves, but on stronger off-season days a wave forms over the shallow bar by the old bunker.
The thing nobody mentions until it is too late is the semi-submerged breakwater near Mini Beach: it does not show, and it sits where you would come in. Summer means bathers, authorized launch corridors and paid parking that really is enforced.

Character

mixed

fills in: In the warm season the wind commonly holds until sunset, which is what makes the late sessions here. No source gives the hour it fills in.

Typical strength

12-18 knots on Ponente.

A regular local spot on both thermal and synoptic wind. Ponente is the clean, forgiving day; outside summer the waves make it more demanding.
Usable much of the year. The main season is April-November, and the wave sessions come outside the bathing season.

Thermal or synoptic

both

The quiver, in words

Indicative, worked from the 12-18 knot Ponente rather than measured here: a 75-85 kg rider is on 10-12 m for the normal day, drops to 9 m at the top of that range, and wants 7 m on the stronger off-season fronts.

Direction to shore

W Ponente is side to side-on; SW Libeccio is side-on; S Ostro is onshore; SE Scirocco is side-on; NW Maestrale is side to side-off and gusty.

Dominant direction

W to WNW Ponente is the main usable wind; SW Libeccio and SE Scirocco also work; NW Maestrale is reported gusty/side-off and not recommended by local guides.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rules & access
2026: no bathing-safety ordinance covering this beach was found, so the rules that apply here are the ones the maritime authority for the Rome district and the Comune di Ladispoli issue each season. The standard Italian arrangement is that during the bathing season kitesurf launch and landing inside the reserved bathing strip must go through an authorised, buoyed launch corridor, installed with the competent municipality's authorisation, used one kite at a time, with a body-drag departure and re-entry near shore and no manoeuvring by the beach. An authorised launch channel at Marina di San Nicola is reported, but its permit and its operating dates are unconfirmed. Read the flags and the corridor buoys on the beach before rigging.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Pick a Ponente day: side to side-on at 12-18 knots is the cleanest this beach gets.
  • Give the semi-submerged breakwater in front of Mini Beach a wide berth going out and coming in.
  • Skip Maestrale unless you know the beach and have someone watching the water.
  • Pay for the parking. The fines here are handed out.
  • In summer, check the flags and the active corridor first: corridors want a body-drag departure and re-entry near shore, one kite at a time.
