Sancti Petri is the Chiclana spot, built around the beach, the shallows and the channel opposite the Castillo de Sancti Petri. The island and the La Arihuela shallows take most of the Atlantic swell out of the water, so the normal day is flattish freeride that chops up once Poniente gets on it.
W, WNW and NW are the directions to want. Levante here is rare, and when it does arrive it is gusty and blowing offshore; local advice on whether it is rideable at all conflicts, so do not plan a trip around it.
The channel is no place to teach yourself: strong tidal current, working boat traffic, a marina at the end of it. Schools run lessons and manage the timing and the access, which is what makes a first week here work.
Summer is the tight season, with navigation prohibited or limited outside the authorized nautical channels, so March to May and September to October are the honest months.

Character

Poniente-sector wind is the practical kite wind. Levante strong enough to ride is rare, gusty and offshore.
Spring and autumn are the shoulder seasons that work, with fewer people and usable westerly weather. Summer navigation is limited by the Chiclana beach restrictions and the authorized nautical channels.

Direction to shore

Poniente is the working direction and arrives side-onshore from the W and NW. SW, S and NW all ride. Levante blows offshore, and E and NE are the worst directions here.SE is offshore and dangerous on most of this coast, though it is reported usable on some days at Punta del Boqueron and La Laja.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

bay/channel

Standing depth

The dependable shallow ground is at Punta del Boqueron, where low tide uncovers a wide area you can stand in. Vast shallows also lie off La Arihuela, but no depth or tide state has been put on them. Close to shore at Lavaculos the bottom is shallow and mixed with shells and small stones, so footwear helps.

Tides

Plan the session around the tide. A falling or low tide is the safer window: low water uncovers the sandbars and gives you something to stand on, while the reef and rock at the bunker wave section come up shallow at the same time. The channel current runs hardest on the change.

Temperature

22.6°C summer · 15.1°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty or a thin full suit in summer depending on how much the wind chills you, full suit in winter. Novo Sancti Petri water averages about 22.6 C in August and 15.1 C in February.

Currents

Strong tidal current in the shipping channel, and enough current along the shallows to sweep loose equipment away quickly. It is the main reason not to teach yourself anywhere near the caño.

16–23°C water
The island and the Castillo de Sancti Petri knock down most of the Atlantic swell, so the water is mostly flat or chopped-up freeride in Poniente. In a big swell there is a fast reef break over rock at low tide near the bunker, which is for experienced riders.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Marked as ridable at any level, and local schools teach here. An independent beginner still needs supervision, because of the channel current, the boat traffic and the summer zoning.

Rescue

School boat support is reportedly around in season for sandbar access. No public dedicated kite rescue is on record.

Launch

Sandy launch on the Sancti Petri and La Barrosa side. Schools use the sheltered shallows and, in season, run boats out to the sandbar for more space. Lavaculos is a winter launch only. The year-round option is Punta del Boqueron, reached by a boat shuttle from the Sancti Petri port for about 5 EUR as of 2026; the navigable box there runs from the point to the castle lengthwise and from the sandbank to the reefs across.

  • boat traffic
  • Strong tidal current in the shipping channel.
  • Boat traffic and a working marina/anchorage environment.
  • Rocks at the low-tide reef/bunker wave section.
  • Levante is rare, gusty and offshore.
  • Summer beach restrictions and swimmer conflict.
  • Strong tidal current in the shipping channel, fast enough to carry loose gear away.
  • Working marina and anchorage: boat traffic, the buoyed channel and its marker stakes.
  • Rocks and reef at the low-tide bunker wave section.
  • Levante is rare, gusty and offshore; Playa de Sancti Petri in Levante is called expert-only locally.
  • SE is offshore and dangerous along most of this coast.
  • Summer beach restrictions and swimmer conflict on La Barrosa and Playa de Sancti Petri.
  • Shells and small stones in the shallows at Lavaculos.
  • Anglers and fishing lines share the point at Punta del Boqueron.
Rules & access
2026: in summer, navigation off Chiclana is prohibited except through the authorised buoyed nautical channels. Kitesurfing is prohibited in summer on La Barrosa and on Playa de Sancti Petri/Lavaculos, and Lavaculos works as a winter-only launch, which leaves Punta del Boqueron as the practical summer option, ridden inside the authorised channel. No municipal ordinance text was available to confirm the exact boundaries, so read the buoys and the beach signs before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Take local school advice on tide timing before you go near the channel.
  • Keep clear of the marina, the boats and the main shipping lane.
  • Do not treat Levante as the default direction here; check locally before launching.
  • Check the low-tide rocks before riding the bunker wave, and leave it alone unless you are experienced.
  • In summer, move to Punta del Boqueron and stay inside the authorized nautical channel.
  • Aim for a falling or low tide: the sandbars come out of the water and you get ground under your feet.
  • Getting to Punta del Boqueron means the boat shuttle from the Sancti Petri port, about 5 EUR as of 2026.
  • Give the anglers on the point room; fishing and kites do not mix well there.

FAQ

Is Sancti Petri suitable for beginners?

Yes, it is marked as suitable for any level and local schools operate lessons there. Independent beginners should still get supervision because of channel current, boat traffic and summer zoning.

What is the wind like at Sancti Petri?

The recommended kite directions are W, WNW and NW. Sufficiently strong Levante is described as rare, gusty and offshore, so it is not the default wind to plan around.

When is the best time to kite Sancti Petri?

March, April, May, September and October are the best verified months, giving fewer crowds and usable westerly weather.

Are there rules or restricted zones at Sancti Petri?

In summer, navigation in Chiclana is prohibited except through authorized nautical channels, and one source lists La Barrosa and Playa de Sancti Petri/Lavaculos as restricted, leaving Punta del Boqueron as the practical summer option. Check current buoyed-channel signage before launching.

Are there kite schools near Sancti Petri?

Why Not Fly, Nautica Gurri and Cadiz Kite are listed as local schools or sources serving the spot.
