The spot

Poniente wind

Poniente is what makes Conil work. Out of the west sector it comes in smooth and constant, 12-25 knots, and on high tidal coefficients the Río Salado backs up into a shallow flat lagoon that the schools and the freestylers use.

Atlantic beach

The Atlantic beach next to it, at Bateles and Fontanilla, is a different animal: chop or waves depending on how hard the poniente pushes, and on stormy days it turns into an advanced wave session rather than anything a beginner should touch.

Levante and alternatives

Levante and north blow offshore and gusty at the town beach, so a levante forecast means driving to Caños de Meca instead.

Summer restrictions

The complication is summer. Kitesurf is prohibited inside the river and on Bateles/Fontanilla through the bathing season, and the permitted option shifts south onto Castilnovo, so from June to September you read the signs before you rig. The rest of the year, 1 October to 31 May, the restrictions ease and the wind is better anyway.

Standing depth

The Río Salado lagoon mostly lets you stand when the tidal coefficient is 90 or higher, which is also the only time the flat water really forms; on smaller coefficients there is not much lagoon to work with. The open Bateles and Fontanilla beach next door shelves away normally and is not standing water.

Atlantic tide matters at the river mouth. The flat lagoon forms on high tidal coefficients, from about 90 up.

2026: two summer windows are posted and they do not agree.

Kitesurf is prohibited inside Río Salado and on Los Bateles, La Fontanilla and Roche either from 1 June to 30 September or from 15 June to 15 September, with summer kiting allowed only on Castilnovo, from the Río Salado mouth southward.

Verify the current municipal signage.

The 2024/2026 municipal beach ordinance sets the Conil beach season at 1 May to 31 October and carries no kite-specific article.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

Ride here outside July and August, or ask a local rider or school where kiting is allowed that week.
Check the posted signage for the Río Salado lagoon before you launch; the river zone opens and closes with the season.
For flat water, watch the tide coefficient as much as the wind: 90 or higher is what fills the lagoon.
If levante is blowing, drive to Caños de Meca.
In summer, go in and out through the marked nautical channel only, and keep your tricks well off the shore.

Route

A rental car is the practical way to reach Conil and the neighbouring Cádiz coast spots. There is no direct train, and bus coverage is thin next to driving. In July and August the parking nearest Los Bateles is paid blue zone, so come early or park further back and walk the seafront.

About 45-60 minutes from Jerez by car; about 90-120 minutes from Seville in normal traffic.
