Bolonia is a Tarifa-area beach where the wind is not the problem, the rules are. The bay is broad Atlantic sand at El Lentiscal, shallow for about 50-100 m out, and the two winds behave the way they do everywhere on this coast: Poniente from the west is steadier and flatter, Levante from the east is stronger and gustier and, with a swell behind it, builds wave lines up to about 2.5 m that only experienced riders should be out in.
As of 2026 kitesurfing and windsurfing are prohibited on the beach except inside the zone set aside for the kite schools, and the local police patrol it. Enforcement is uneven, which is exactly how people end up fined.
The dune and the Baelo Claudia ruins sit right behind the sand, so the summer beach belongs to visitors rather than to you. Come in the shoulder months or in winter, ask a school where the legal zone sits that week, and treat Bolonia as a day trip from Valdevaqueros rather than a base.

fills in: Poniente along the Tarifa coast usually builds through the afternoon as the thermal adds to it. The onset hour at Bolonia itself is unconfirmed.

Typical strength

Poniente runs around 12-25 knots and Levante around 20-40 knots along the Tarifa coast. No measured Bolonia-only range is published.

Poniente is the steadier and friendlier of the two winds. Bolonia is less consistent than the main Tarifa beaches, and that was still the case in 2026.
The regional wind season runs March to October. Summer beach rules and the volume of visitors push Bolonia into the shoulder months and winter unless a legal zone is clearly posted.

The quiver, in words

Bring a quiver for the Tarifa coast, roughly 5-14 m. No Bolonia-only size range is confirmed.

Direction to shore

Poniente, out of the west sector, is the wind you ride here. The exact angle it hits the launch is unconfirmed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean bay

Standing depth

A shallow strip of about 50-100 m off the sand. Nobody has mapped where you actually stop touching bottom.

Tides

Semidiurnal Atlantic tide, two highs and two lows a day. On a small coefficient the swing is around half a metre; on a big spring coefficient over 100 it approaches two metres, which walks the waterline a long way across sand this flat and changes how much shallow water you have to launch and body-drag in. Check the coefficient, not just the hour.

Temperature

23°C summer · 16°C winter

Wetsuit

Water temperature peaks around 22-24 C in August, when a 2 mm top or shorty can be useful in wind, and drops to about 16 C around early March, when a 4/3 or 3/2 with boots is typical.

17–23°C water
Flat when Poniente blows, chop and small to medium waves the rest of the time, and proper wave lines up to about 2.5 m when Levante lands on top of a swell. The sand is undeveloped, with the Duna de Bolonia and the Baelo Claudia ruins right behind the beach.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Not a beginner beach. The water is shallow and sandy, but the wind is less consistent than further down the coast, Levante is gusty and hard, and the legal zone moves. Learn with a school that knows the current zoning.

A natural beach with Roman ruins and dune traffic. Outside the bathing season it is quiet for kiting, partly because kiting is restricted.

Rescue

No kite rescue, and no lifeguard or first-aid post appears among the beach services listed for Bolonia. Tarifa runs a seasonal beach surveillance and rescue plan in summer, but no Bolonia staffing was confirmed for 2026. In an emergency the number is 112. The schools working the designated zone are the only organised help on the water, and only when they are out.

Launch

Wide sandy beach at Bolonia and El Lentiscal, reached by car off the Tarifa-Cadiz road with a short walk from free parking. Controlled parking zones apply in Bolonia in summer.

Hazards riders report 8

  • gusty wind holes toward the right side
  • horses/bystanders on the beach
  • Levante can be very strong and gusty
  • Levante can be strong and gusty on the Tarifa coast.
  • Wave conditions at Bolonia with Levante and swell are described as for experienced riders.
  • Summer beach users and protected/natural-beach constraints.
  • Unclear and potentially restrictive kite/windsurf zoning at Bolonia.
  • Kiting and windsurfing are restricted to the designated kite-school zone, with patrols and fines reported elsewhere on the beach.
Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing and windsurfing are prohibited on Playa de Bolonia except inside the zone designated for the kite schools. The local police patrol the beach and fines have been handed out; enforcement was still uneven in mid-2026 but real. An older claim that the south end of the beach is open in summer no longer holds. Read the posted beach-plan signage before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Treat Bolonia as a shoulder-season or winter option unless the posted signage clearly allows kiting.
  • Ask a Tarifa or Bolonia school where the school zone sits before you unroll anything; the 2026 restriction covers the rest of the beach.
  • With Levante and swell, stay on the sand unless you are happy in strong gusty wind and real waves.
  • Park in the free area off the Tarifa-Cadiz road; in summer the controlled parking zones apply.
  • Bring a suit even in August: the Atlantic sits in the low 20s C at peak, around 22-24 C, and is down to about 16 C by early March.
  • Look up the tide coefficient before you plan a session around wading depth. A 100 day and a 30 day give you two different beaches.
  • There is no lifeguard post in the service list and no kite rescue. 112 is the number, and the drive in is 8 km of small road from the N-340.

Getting there

Route

Drive from Tarifa toward Cadiz on the N-340 and turn off at the Bolonia sign around km 70, then about 8 km down a small road to the beach. A car is the only way in. Parking sits near the busier central part of the beach, and controlled parking zones apply in summer.

FAQ

Is Bolonia suitable for beginners?

No, sources emphasize inconsistent wind, strong gusty Levante and unclear rules, so beginners should use a school rather than treat it as a default lesson beach.

What is the wind like at Bolonia?

Poniente is the steadier, friendlier westerly wind, while Levante is stronger and gustier and, combined with swell, can produce waves up to about 2.5 meters.

Are there rules for kiting at Bolonia?

Posted rules conflict between sources: some describe a summer ban with kiting allowed only in the south of the beach the rest of the year, while a 2025 police reminder restricts nautical sports to a designated school area, so current signage should be checked on site.

When is the best time to kite at Bolonia?

The main window runs January through June and September to October, since summer beach rules and heavy visitor use limit access.
