Beach and conditions

Los Lances Norte is Tarifa's wide-sand workhorse, running north-west from the Rio Jara toward Arte Vida with the N-340 behind it. Rigging space is enormous, the schools are all here, and the parking is close to the sand. Poniente from the west is the friendlier wind: steadier, off the sea, with chop and small waves. Levante from the east is stronger, gustier and cross-off to offshore on this beach; it can flatten the water for powered freestyle and big air, and it will also take you downwind fast, which is why rescue cover matters.

March-October is the best-supported season and June-August is when the beach is fullest.

Los Lances Sur

Los Lances Sur is a different question, reportedly bathing-only through the summer season. Stay out of the protected lagoon and wetland whatever the water level makes it look like.

Poniente is the steadier and safer learning wind because it comes from the sea with a side-on/onshore angle.
Levante is stronger, drier, gustier and offshore to side-off at Los Lances Norte, so independent beginners should avoid strong Levante and experienced riders should use rescue cover.

Tarifa reportedly has more than 300 windy days a year.

March-June offers a more balanced mix and friendlier Poniente days; July-August is peak high season with stronger Levante runs and heavy crowds; September-October remains strong but usually starts to thin out. Winter can still work, but is more variable and wave-prone.

Service and coverage

A private rescue-boat service covers the beach all year, based at Los Lances Norte beside Chiringuito Agua with a second base at Valdevaqueros, and will pick riders up to about 1 km offshore. Hours are 11:00-20:00 from June to September and 11:00-18:00 from October until the clocks change, every day; a call-out outside those hours costs about EUR 300 (2026).

Pricing and contact

Riders buy a card covering 1, 2 or 5 rescues in advance; without a card a pick-up runs about EUR 50-150 depending on distance, and about EUR 200 in the Balneario/Bajeta sector (2026). Call +34 633 95 31 88, use VHF channel 76, or signal from the water.

Very large sandy launch on the north section from Rio Jara toward Arte Vida, parallel to the N-340. Two public car parks, around five beach bars with some open all year, showers and air compressors on the strip.The 2024-2027 beach plan places three nautical-school modules and a left-luggage module in the Rio Jara-Los Carriles stretch, along with a chiringuito, an ecological island and a land ambulance transfer point.School and free-rider zones are buoyed in summer. Los Lances Norte

2026: Los Lances Norte is open to kitesurfing all year, but from 15 June to 15 September the beach is divided into marked bathing, kite-school and independent-rider zones, the same summer split applied to the other main Tarifa beaches.

Los Lances Sur

2026: Los Lances Sur is rideable only from 15 September to 15 June and is bathing-only inside the summer window.

Beach exploitation plan

2024-2027: the Tarifa beach-exploitation plan sets out the Rio Jara-Los Carriles section with three nautical-school modules, a left-luggage module, a chiringuito, an ecological island and a land ambulance transfer point, and it also maps individual Kentish plover nests on that stretch of sand, each with its own protection perimeter drawn around it. Those perimeters are on the beach itself, not only in the wetland.

Habitat protection

2013 onward: sport use, kitesurf and windsurf named explicitly, is prohibited in the Los Lances coastal lagoon inside the Parque Natural del Estrecho and its ZEC/ZEPA habitat.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

On a first Tarifa trip, take the Poniente days or book supervised lessons at Los Lances Norte before you try Levante on your own.
For Levante, start near Rio Jara and Los Carriles where the wind comes in cleanest, and arrange rescue cover before you launch.
Head further south toward Río Jara in summer for more space and fewer people.
Save the rescue number before the first Levante session: +34 633 95 31 88, VHF channel 76. A card bought in advance costs far less than a pick-up bought while drifting.
Arrive early in July and August: the two public car parks and the beach strip get congested despite the size of the beach.
Check the zoning when you arrive, because school, freeride and bathing corridors move with the seasonal buoying and are not described consistently online.
Pack a broad quiver or plan to rent; the same week can swing from 12-18 kt Poniente to 30+ kt Levante.
Keep off the Los Lances lagoon and the signed nesting areas, and watch for small fenced or marked patches on the dry sand in spring and early summer: those are plover nests with a protection perimeter, and they sit right where people rig.

Gibraltar is the closest airport listed by Turismo de Tarifa at 50 km/30 min; Malaga is the main larger international option at 150 km/about 1 h 40 min; Jerez is listed at 135 km/about 1 h.

Route

Drive the N-340/A-7 corridor to Tarifa, then continue north-west past Rio Jara/Camping Rio Jara toward Los Carriles/Arte Vida. Public buses connect Tarifa with nearby cities, and Malaga airport routes commonly require Algeciras or Marbella connections depending on operator/date.
