No thermal clock here. Getares runs on synoptic Levante, so a working episode can be blowing at first light, through the night, or straight across a whole day, and it lives or dies with the pressure gradient rather than the hour. Levante episodes in the Strait often carry their hardest hours overnight and early morning and slacken as the day goes on; that is regional behaviour and unconfirmed for this beach.

The spot

The fallback

Getares is the Levante fallback for the days Tarifa is unrideable, a beach on the south side of Algeciras facing the Strait and the Bay of Gibraltar. When Tarifa is over 30 knots, Algeciras often gets a friendlier 16-25 knot version of the same easterly. Outside those episodes there is usually nothing: an older station logged an annual average of 4 knots from 2014-03-01 to 2017-04-30.

Water and waves

The water is chop and small waves rather than flat, and a strong Levante brings shorebreak and disorganized surf that can build to around 1.5 m. The working wind is very onshore and the shorebreak eats your margin, so this is not a beginner spot.

Where to set up

Set up toward the north end by the parking and the bars, where any drift takes you along the central beach instead of into the enclosed southern corner, and stay off the rocky reef at the San Garcia end.

Summer restrictions

Summer is the catch: the 2026 Algeciras beach season runs 1 June to 10 September, the ordinance puts bathers first in the marked zones, there is no designated kite area, and 15 June-15 September is quoted as the no-kiting window.

Cover exists only inside the official Algeciras beach season: 1 June to 10 September in 2026, run by the Spanish Red Cross under a 2026-2027 contract worth about 1.12 million euros, reportedly daily 12:00 to 20:00, with the coordination module on Rinconcillo beach and reinforced cover on the San Juan, Virgen del Carmen and Virgen de la Palma feast days.

Outside those dates and hours nobody is watching the water; offshore trouble goes through 112. Nothing kite-specific.

2026: Algeciras beach services and lifeguards run 1 June to 10 September. The municipal beach ordinance published as the 2020 text sets the bathing season as 1 June to 31 August, extendable to 15 September, and prohibits sports or exercise in bathing zones during the season where they may disturb other users, unless organised or authorised by the Ayuntamiento in signposted or buoyed areas.

Craft and boards are to be launched and beached through properly marked channels, and the bather-protection zone reaches up to 250 m from the shoreline.

Getares status

In 2026 Getares has no designated summer kitesurf area, and 15 June to 15 September is quoted as the no-kiting window. No permit system for independent kitesurfing here was found.

Rider tips

Use it as Plan B when Tarifa is too strong in Levante, not as a spot with its own wind.
Compare the Getares forecast against Tarifa before driving, and pack 9-12 m for a working Levante with 5-7 m for the strong days.
Rig at the north end by the parking and bars if the locals are doing the same, because drifting off the central beach pushes you into the awkward enclosed section.
Do not take or give a beginner lesson here unless a school has picked the spot for that day and conditions are unusually controlled.
Check signage, lifeguard instructions and local club updates before any summer session; wind is not access.
Keep clear of the San Garcia rocks and reef and out of the signed dune and protected areas.

Getting there

Airport

Gibraltar (GIB) is about 15 km from the spot; Malaga (AGP) about 140 km; Seville (SVQ) about 200 km.

Route

By car from Tarifa toward Algeciras, follow the Getares signs after the approach roundabouts and park near the promenade. From Malaga airport the road runs the A-7/AP-7 corridor; from Gibraltar you cross into La Linea first, then continue by car or local transport.

Transfer

About 20 minutes by car from Tarifa in kite-school guides; about 15-30 minutes from Gibraltar/La Linea depending on border and traffic; about 90-120 minutes by road from Malaga airport depending on route and traffic.

Sleep in Algeciras or Getares for the closest beach access and lower-key city services, or in Tarifa if the trip is mainly a kite holiday, for the schools, the spot choice and the nightlife. Getares itself is a semi-urban beach with promenade bars, restaurants and holiday apartments rather than a kite resort.
