On the clock

14:00 · 15:00 · 19:00 · 20:00

Builds from around midday, settled in by 14:00-15:00, and drops off towards sunset, roughly 19:00-20:00.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Agios Ioannis, ridden as Milos Beach by the old windmills about 2 km north of Lefkada Town, is the island's main open-sea launch. The wind is a summer thermal, the Maistros, building from around noon and usually settling in at 14:00-15:00, W-NW/N and cross-on from the right, 15-20 knots on an ordinary day.
Expect chop and small waves rather than lagoon flat, and on strong north days a shore break with short-period waves that asks for an intermediate at least. The entry is the catch: smooth slippery rocks and slabs sit at or just under the surface where you walk in, and glass and debris turn up on the sand.
Parking is right above the shoreline, the best launch is in front of the three northernmost windmills, and food, a bar and a school are on site. Beginners are taught here and a shallow zone is marked, but first sessions go easier at Agios Nikolaos or The Bridge.
July and August are the windiest and the most crowded; June and early September buy you the same thermal with more room. Kiting is prohibited in the lagoon behind the beach because of fishing nets and baskets, so do not plan on flat water there.

Character

thermal

fills in: Builds from around midday, settled in by 14:00-15:00, and drops off towards sunset, roughly 19:00-20:00.

Typical strength

15-24 knots on a working summer afternoon, most often 15-20. Strong north days push past that and are a different session.

Generally reliable summer thermal wind, stable and almost always working at Agios Ioannis, but stronger north-wind days can be demanding with shore break and waves.
Main season May to September, with the schools running roughly April to September. The wind is reliable from the second week of May to mid-September, and June to mid-September is given as about a 95% chance of a working thermal. July and August are the windiest and the busiest; June and early September buy the same breeze with more room.
A sunny thermal spell can stretch riding into October, and some August days still come in light.

15-20 knots

The quiver, in words

For 75-85 kg, 9-12 m covers the ordinary 15-20 knot thermal: 11-12 m early in the window, 9 m once it reaches the mid-twenties. Bring something larger for light August days if you are on a twin-tip.

Direction to shore

Cross-on from the right through the SW-W-NW arc, so a rider who goes down tends to drift back towards the beach rather than out to sea.

Dominant direction

W, NW, N; some spot guides also include SW during the thermal window

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

mixed

Standing depth

Shallow for about 30 m off the beach, then over 2 m in the riding area. Treat the standing zone as a strip along the shore, not a lagoon you can walk around in.

Tides

Very small Ionian tide range: 0.01-0.17 m at Lefkada on 26 August 2026, and Agios Ioannis table heights around 0.0-0.2 m in August 2026.

Temperature

25-27°C summer · 15-17°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer usually shorts/rash vest; spring/fall shorty useful; winter normal wetsuit.

Currents

A current reportedly runs north along the beach; no official current data was found.

16–28°C water
Open Ionian Sea beach by the windmills: calmer mornings, afternoon thermal chop. In a normal summer thermal the water runs flat-to-choppy or medium choppy and wavy; after a strong wind day a shore break appears. North wind and stronger events build larger, short-period waves over a rocky, pebbly shore.
Flat-water claims for this part of Lefkada refer to The Bridge/Cleopatra, The Church or Agios Nikolaos, not the main Agios Ioannis/Milos open-sea launch.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Lessons run here and a beginner-safe shore zone is marked, but the main Milos/Agios Ioannis launch suits intermediate and advanced riders better because of slippery rocks, rock slabs, shore break and open-sea chop. First lessons may be easier at Agios Nikolaos or The Bridge depending on wind and school setup.

The scene

What riders come here for

freestylewave ridingadvancedfreeridetrainingdownwinders
Active resort and community scene with schools, beach bars and competitions. How crowded it gets is disputed and unconfirmed: plenty of space on some busy days, booked-out peak months and a packed beach at other times.

Rescue

Milos Beach Kite & Windsurf Resort's Bay Watch rescue-boat and off-road support is bundled with the personal Kite Pass, which requires Milos Beach staff certification; it is not described as a service open to independent riders outside that certified/Pass system. Verify active rescue coverage locally before relying on it.

Launch

Long sand-and-pebble beach in front of the old windmills/Milos Beach Club. The best launch is in front of the three northernmost windmills, with ample parking close above the shoreline. Entry can be awkward because smooth slippery rocks and slabs sit at or just below the shore, especially when onshore waves break.

Hazards riders report 9

  • sudden strong gusty squalls (locally 'mpourini') in July-September
  • Smooth slippery rocks and rock slabs at the shore and in the first water-entry zone.
  • Shore break after strong wind days and on onshore/north-wind sessions.
  • Short-period chop and waves; north-wind waves reportedly range from about 0.5 m to 3 m on the stronger days.
  • North-running alongshore current, reported but unconfirmed.
  • Glass, trash and sea debris reported.
  • High rider density in July-August and around competitions.
  • Boat traffic in the mid-beach/open riding area reported.
  • July-September mpourini/bourini strong northwesterly squall/wind days reported; confirm forecast before launching.
Rules & access
2026: the only registered beach exclusive to kitesurfers is Myloi, next to Agios Ioannis. Yellow buoys zone the water in front of Milos Beach Club, windsurfing to the left and kitesurfing to the right; that zoning and the Kite Pass certification system are run by Milos Beach staff rather than by a published municipal or port-authority ordinance. Kiteboarding is prohibited in the lagoon behind the spot because of fishing nets and baskets, and on other peninsula beaches. Kiting is also prohibited in the flat, shallow (about 80 m) gulf of Vasiliki on the island's other coast, because of the shallow depth and gusty wind. The spot is not paid, and the Kite Pass is free of charge except where instruction or lessons are required.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Watch the beach as well as the forecast: the thermal fills in after midday and strengthens through the late afternoon.
  • Wear booties, or walk in slowly and look down; the rocks and slabs at the entry are slippery and there is glass on the sand.
  • On strong north days treat it as intermediate to advanced: the shore break over a rocky entry is the risk, not the wind strength.
  • Launch in front of the three northernmost windmills and hold the yellow-buoy zoning at Milos Beach Club, windsurf left and kite right; ask the school where the line sits that week.
  • For flat water go to The Bridge/Cleopatra, The Church downwinder or Agios Nikolaos; the open-sea beach will not give you that.
  • Book a bed early for mid-July to late August; Lefkada Town, Frini or Agios Ioannis itself keeps you close enough to see the thermal arrive.
