Almofala is a beach village in Itarema, on the Ceará coast, that most kiters see from the water: the start or the waypoint of a downwinder rather than a spot you drive to and set up on.
The riding is east of the village toward the lighthouse and the river mouth at Torrões: shallow, flat water behind the sandbars, small waves breaking on the bars, chop in between.
The wind is the Nordeste, the NE trade with a thermal push during the day, 25-30 knots on the Torrões downwind run, July to December; February to May is the rainy season, which here means occasional showers. The water is 29 C all year, so shorts.
Nobody has documented a rescue setup, a teaching zone or any rules here, and the beach is empty, with no school at Almofala itself; the nearest operators are Hura Beach in the Torrões area and the schools at Praia da Barra/Ilha do Guajiru and Praia do Farol. It is about 200 minutes by road from Fortaleza.
The directories file the spot as Almofala Torrões and none of them separates the village launch from Torrões, so ask on the ground about the exact river-mouth access and the tide window. It also gets ridden as a downwind destination from Icaraí and Moitas.

The quiver, in words

At the 25-30 knots reported for the Almofala run in the July-December season, a 75-85 kg rider is on 7-9 m. Carry a 10-12 m for the lighter mornings and for January to June. Indicative from the reported wind range, not a local kit survey.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow, but the depth and where you can stand at each tide are unconfirmed.

Wetsuit

No wetsuit normally needed; water is reported at 29 C with shorts-only conditions.

Currents

Expect river-mouth and tidal current; nothing measured for Almofala itself.

Rescue

None documented. No lifeguard post, no boat cover and no kite-specific rescue at Almofala or Torrões, and the municipal beach listings name no safety service at either. Ride the river mouth and the downwind legs with a partner rather than alone.

Launch

Long empty sandy beach at Almofala village with all the space you want. The flat water is at the Aracati-Mirim river mouth by Torrões, about 4 km east of the village and roughly five minutes by the municipal road, so riders drive to it rather than reach it downwind.Downwind runs from Icaraí de Amontada and Moitas come the other way, westward along the coast, passing Torrões before Almofala.

Rules & access
2026: no kite-specific rule, buoyed channel or marked bathing zone is published for Almofala or Torrões. The municipal beach listings carry no water-sport regulation and direct questions to the Itarema tourism office, turismo.cultura@itarema.ce.gov.br, (88) 3667-1133. Almofala beach is a green turtle feeding area; no posted restriction covering it has been found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch at Almofala and ride east toward the lighthouse and the Torrões river mouth; the flat water sits behind the sandbars there.
  • Ask a local operator (Hura Beach in the Torrões area, or the Praia da Barra schools) about the river-mouth access and the tide window before you go; nobody has published either.
  • Carry water and full sun cover; the water is 29 C, the beach is empty and infrastructure is thin.
  • Come July to December for the 25-30 knot days; February to May is the rainy season.
  • No rescue is documented, so ride the downwinder with a group, not alone.
  • The flat water sits behind the sandbars at the Aracati-Mirim river mouth by Torrões, 4 km east of Almofala village; drive there, because from the village it is upwind.
  • A 7-9 m covers the peak of the season for a 75-85 kg rider; add a 10-12 m for the mornings and for the off months.
  • Green turtles feed off this beach, so keep an eye on what is under you in the shallows.
