Caetanos is the wild end of the Icaraizinho coast: a preserved beach and a set of rain-fed dune lagoons at Caetanos de Cima, in Amontada, with almost nobody on the water. At low tide the water goes ultra-flat, and that is the reason to make the trip.
The Nordeste blows side-onshore from the NE, ENE or E at 18 to 35 knots through the June to January season, August to December the surest months. The lagoons are seasonal.
How much water they hold depends on the rain, so the rigging point moves with the tide and the lagoon level, and nobody has published which lagoons are rideable in which month.
Most riders get there by 4x4 or buggy from Icarai de Amontada or Moitas, or on a supported downwinder; Villa Mango runs a 15 km Caetanos to Villa Mango route, and Barraca do Bento in Caetanos is the address the Icaraizinho operators use. Intermediate and up.
There is no rescue and very little infrastructure in the village, so beginners are better off at the supervised spots back in Icaraizinho.

fills in: The afternoon build shows in the Icarai de Amontada statistics; unconfirmed at Caetanos itself.

Typical strength

18-35 knots in the Icaraizinho/Amontada high season; 20-35 knots on the best days.

Clean and consistent trade wind in the high season along the Icaraizinho/Caetanos stretch.
The Icaraizinho schools run their high season June to January; for Ceara as a whole the window is mid-July to mid-February, most reliable August to December.

The quiver, in words

Indicative from the 18-35 knot season range, not from local logs: a 75-85 kg rider spends most of the high season on 7-9 m, drops to 5-7 m on the 30-knot afternoons, and wants 9-12 m at the start of the season in June or in a late-season lull.

Direction to shore

Nordeste is side-onshore; NE, ENE and E are the recommended directions for Caetanos.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean beach and seasonal dune/freshwater lagoons

Standing depth

Ultra-flat at low tide. How far out you can stand has not been measured.

Tides

Low tide is when the stretch goes shallow and ultra-flat; on the push the same water picks up the waves that people ride and foil. The dune lagoons behind the beach are rain-fed: Lagoa Sabiaguaba holds water for most of the year, the smaller ones come and go with the rain, and no month-by-month record of levels exists.

Temperature

28°C summer · 27°C winter

Wetsuit

No wetsuit normally needed; lycra/rash vest for sun protection.

A preserved stretch near Icaraizinho and Moitas, ridden on downwinders and in the flat-water lagoons. The rigging point moves with the tide and with how much water the lagoons hold.

Rescue

None. The nearest thing to cover is the 4x4 that the Icaraizinho operators send along the beach on supported downwinders, and that exists only if you booked one. Caetanos has no bank and no real medical care; anything serious means Itapipoca or Sobral.
Agree a pick-up point and a time before you launch.

Launch

Remote beach and lagoon launches around Caetanos de Cima. The Icaraizinho operators start or finish downwinders here and use Barraca do Bento in Caetanos as their address on the ground.

Rider tips

  • Base yourself in Icarai de Amontada or Moitas and come out with a school or guide the first time; Barraca do Bento is the address the operators use.
  • Ask about lagoon water levels before you plan a flat-water day; they are rain-fed and seasonal.
  • Time it for low tide, when the water goes ultra-flat.
  • Carry your own water and sun cover and agree a pick-up before you launch; there is no rescue and few people around.
  • Bring cash. The village has no bank and no ATM, and medical care means a drive to Itapipoca or Sobral.
  • Book a downwinder if you want any cover at all: the operators run a 4x4 down the beach alongside the group.
