Chapin Beach, or Chapin Memorial Beach, is on the north side of Dennis, facing Cape Cod Bay. It is a frontal-wind beach: N, NE and NW are the directions that work, and the months are March through May and September through November rather than a summer thermal season.
The water is shallow, flat inside the sandbar, with chop and small waves outside depending on how hard it blows. Tide runs the day. At dead low you walk a long way across the flats to find water; high tide is the one to aim for.
Dennis town regulations keep kiting and rigging to designated areas and keep kiteboarding out of the lifeguarded and swim-buoy areas, and if plovers nest in the dunes no kite flies within 200 m of a nest.
Bring proper rubber, because the season and the water temperature disagree: the bay peaks around 70 F in mid to late summer and wants a drysuit from late October until mid-April, which covers most of the good wind.
The rest of it is the 4WD ramp at the west end, summer beach users and a parking lot that is not large.

fills in: North winds are frontal and tend to be best early. The SW thermal can come in later and cut the northerly down.

Best in northeast and northwest. North wind is frontal, so the strength moves around a lot through a session.
Best months are March-May and September-November, though the beach is rideable year-round, with NE or NW the directions to wait for.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean

Standing depth

Shallow a long way out. Flats and sandbars run far offshore and inside the bar you are in standing depth over most of the tide. At dead low the inside shallows dry out and you walk to find water at all.

Tides

High tide is the one to plan for. Low uncovers broad flats, dries the inside shallows and leaves a long walk to water, and those bars are where the flats fishermen work. Large range, and the water returns quickly once it turns.

Temperature

19°C summer · 4°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty or a normal summer suit, with the water peaking around 70 F in mid to late summer. Drysuit from late October until mid-April.

Currents

Moderate tidal current across the flats, and the flood comes back over flat ground fast, so a bar you crossed on the way out can be under water on the way back. No measurement exists for the riding area itself.

4–22°C water
Cape Cod Bay beach with shallow water, flat inside the sandbar, chop and small-to-medium waves outside depending on the wind. Broad sand flats at low tide, a sandy launch, and a 4WD vehicle ramp at the west end.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner, intermediate and expert ability are all listed. The wide sand and the flat water inside the sandbar suit progression, but currents, tide timing, vehicles on the ramp and cold frontal wind mean a new rider wants a school or a local alongside.

Rescue

No kite rescue. Chapin Memorial is staffed from 8:00 to 17:00 in season by town beach staff, which is not a water-rescue service for kiters, so plan on self-rescue, ride with someone and keep a phone in the car for 911.

Launch

Sandy beach with room to launch and land. In summer use the far end, away from the beach crowd. Watch the 4WD ramp at the west end.

Rules & access
2021 regulations, still the version posted by the town in 2026: windsurfing, kiteboarding and board rigging are restricted to the designated areas for that purpose, no rigging in the dunes or salt marsh at any beach, and no kiteboarding, boating, fishing, paddleboarding or diving in areas marked by lifeguards or swim buoys as swimming areas.
Gear may not be left in the parking lot taking up an extra space. Where piping plovers nest, refuge areas of 50 yards or more around the nests and above the high-tide line are signed and symbolically fenced and only authorized people may enter; at West Dennis Beach specifically, kiting is confined to set areas with buoyed setbacks and no kiteboarding is allowed inside the buoyed area.
Riders locally work to a 200 m separation from nests, which is stricter than the town text. Penalties run to a $300 criminal fine or a $50 non-criminal ticket per offence. No animals on the beaches or in the lots from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and dogs banned outright when nests are active ($100).
2026: Chapin Memorial parking is staffed 8:00-17:00, a daily pass or sticker is required during posted beach hours, and parking without one is $50; the daily rate is set annually by the town and is not published in the regulations.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Aim for a NE or NW front and ride early; northerlies often fade as the SW thermal builds later in the day.
  • Skip dead low tide unless you want the long walk across the flats to reach water.
  • Rig on open sand, well clear of the dunes, the salt marsh and any plover fencing.
  • In summer get to the lot early and carry down to the far end, away from beachgoers and the 4WD ramp.
  • Bring a drysuit for the spring and fall sessions; the bay sits around 4 C in winter.

Getting there

Airport

Cape Cod Gateway Airport / Hyannis (HYA) is the nearest airport; Boston Logan (BOS) and Rhode Island T.F. Green (PVD) are the main larger airports for Cape Cod.

Route

Drive to Dennis, then work up to the north side on Route 6A and the local roads toward Chapin and Dr. Botero Road. A car is the only practical way to move gear and chase tide and wind here.
