West Dennis Beach is a Cape Cod beach on Nantucket Sound that fills up in summer, with kiters and with everyone else. The wind that matters is the summer S-SW thermal sea breeze: it comes in during the afternoon and runs around 20 knots on a good day.
Water is shallow at low to medium tide, flat in places, choppy in others, with small waves, and the Bass River mouth goes very flat when the tide allows. In season you launch from one place, the far western end by the jetty.
Off-season the beach opens west of Chair 11, and kiting is less restricted after September 1. Town rules keep kiteboarding and rigging inside designated areas, out of the guarded swimming zones, and add parking restrictions and buoyed setbacks when piping plover chicks are present. Beginners do fine here with an instructor.
Anyone wanting an empty launch or room to boost should go elsewhere: the corner gets tight when it blows on a weekend and the landings are too shallow for jumps.

Typical strength

Summer gives 2-3 good S-SW days a week, and the afternoon southwest thermal runs around 20 knots.

The dependable wind is the summer S-SW thermal; frontal directions fill in the rest. SE through S to SW works, and W as well, with southwest dominant in summer.
Summer is the season. Kiting is less restricted after September 1, but the wind months stay June-August.

Also on record

The Nantucket Sound buoy gives an annual average of 13 kt from WSW, but it sits offshore and is not a beach-specific figure for West Dennis.

The quiver, in words

For 75-85 kg on the summer sea breeze: a 12 m is the workhorse for the 18-20 knot southwest afternoon, a 9-10 m once it pushes past 22-25 knots and the sound starts chopping at 2-4 ft, and a 14-16 m for the many light 12-15 knot days in July and August.Indicative sizes drawn from Nantucket Sound sea-breeze practice; no West Dennis-specific size data exists.

Direction to shore

S, SSW and SW are listed as best directions and are generally onshore to cross-onshore for the south-facing Nantucket Sound beach; W is more sideshore.

Dominant direction

S, SSW and SW in summer, with broader frontal directions possible

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean

Standing depth

Low tide is reportedly 1-3 ft, with water still waist-deep about half a mile out. The Bass River mouth can be too shallow to ride at low tide.

Tides

Rideable at most tide states, but the flat water at the river mouth is tidal and goes too shallow at the bottom of the tide.

Temperature

20°C summer · 4°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer water is around 65 F, so shorts or a shorty if you feel the cold. 10-year averages put July-August at 70-72 F and winter at 37-40 F, so anything outside the warm season means full winter neoprene.

Currents

The Bass River mouth is tidal. No current speed is published for the kite area.

4–25°C water
Nantucket Sound water: shallow at low to medium tide, flat in places, with chop and small waves. Above 25 knots the chop builds to 2-4 ft. The Bass River mouth goes very flat when the tide allows.
The beach itself is long and sandy and collects seaweed after a strong southeast blow.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner, intermediate and expert all ride here, and it is beginner friendly by Cape standards. Beginners still want a lesson and current local launch information: the in-season kite zone gets crowded, and the water is too shallow to be landing jumps in.

Rescue

VHF 16

Lifeguards work the beach in season and the parking and gates are staffed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; there is no kite rescue boat and no kite-specific patrol. Off the beach the Dennis harbormaster covers Bass River and monitors VHF 16 while working channel 66, the beach department is on 508-394-8300 and 911 reaches emergency services.
Outside staffed hours plan on self-rescue and a body-drag downwind toward the jetty.

Launch

Sandy beach launch. In season you launch from the far western end near the jetty and nowhere else; off-season the beach opens up west of Chair 11.

Rules & access
2026: West Dennis Beach is staffed 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and a daily parking pass costs $35, card only. Town beach regulations restrict windsurfing, kiteboarding and board rigging to designated areas, ban rigging in the dunes or salt marsh, and keep kiteboarding out of lifeguard and swim-buoy swimming areas. The Dennis beach regulations, last amended October 12, 2023 and still the governing text, add the plover rules: when chicks are present, West Dennis parking may be restricted with vehicle escorts from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and vehicles must be out by 4 p.m.; refuge areas of 50 yards or more around active nests are marked with signs and symbolic fencing that only authorized persons may enter; windsurfing and kiteboarding are confined to buoy-marked areas, with no kiteboarding inside the buoyed setback. The setback depends on chicks being present rather than on fixed calendar dates. In practice, while the plovers are in the dunes the only launch is the jetty end by the Bass River mouth, riders are asked to stay 150 yards off the beach behind the small marker buoys, and walking back upwind with the kite in the air is not allowed. The windsurfing area is at Chair 9. Off-season you may launch anywhere west of Chair 11 but not east of it, and kiting is less restricted after September 1. The river itself is out of bounds for kiting; the channel outside the mouth may be crossed but not occupied, since it carries boat traffic. Fines run $50 to $300 (2026).

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch at the far west end by the jetty in season, and keep spare lines and kites packed down once the weekend crowd builds.
  • Do not jump near shore. The landings are shallow and there is a 100 ft shoreline buffer.
  • Check the town beach page and the plover notices before you drive all the way to the west lot.
  • Ride the Bass River mouth for flat water, but only on enough tide; low water leaves it too shallow.
  • Come in the afternoon if you want the southwest sea breeze at full strength.
  • Do not jump near shore. The landings are shallow and jumping within 100 ft of the beach is out.
  • During plover season you cannot walk back upwind with the kite up, so rig by the jetty, get out fast and stay 150 yards off the sand.
  • Budget $35 for a daily parking pass (2026), card only, and note the windsurf area is at Chair 9, not the kite corner.
