When it fills in

The summer southwesterly is thermal and typically blows all day rather than filling at a set hour. Autumn is different: the September and October winds come with systems, blow west and veer NE as the front approaches, and can be up at any hour.

Sengekontacket is a shallow salt pond behind Joseph Sylvia State Beach, between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard. The water is knee to waist deep almost everywhere and dead flat, which is why the island's speed and freestyle riders come here. Access is the whole story.
You enter at designated points only, never over the dunes, and you cannot drive to the pond shore unless you are actively shellfishing with a proper permit.
Shell fishermen have right of way and you keep 150 feet off them, their boats and the aquaculture gear, 200 meters off shorebird nesting, chick-rearing and foraging areas through the April 1-August 31 nesting season, and out of the restricted summer swim zones off State Beach entirely (2026).
Which end you use decides the wind: NE at the Jaws Bridge launch is glassy and the most consistent, but it is straight offshore, so ride it only if you can hold upwind, while SW at the first bridge at the north end is onshore, gusty and dirty even though SW is the predominant summer wind.
The low causeway hides the strength from anyone standing on the beach while the kites are in clean flow above it. June through August are the listed best months, and September and October are good whenever the direction lines up.

fills in: The summer southwesterly is thermal and typically blows all day rather than filling at a set hour. Autumn is different: the September and October winds come with systems, blow west and veer NE as the front approaches, and can be up at any hour.

Typical strength

20-plus knots aloft in the right north-sector conditions; no representative range is confirmed.

Reliable and consistent, except SW at the first bridge, which is gusty and dirty. The low causeway hides strong wind from people on the beach while the kites sit in unobstructed flow above it.
June, July and August are the listed best months, but September and October are the ones locals rate: the crowds have gone, the water is still warm and the wind can be relentless. Spring is a mix of NE and SW. Summer wind is predominantly southwest and thermal; September and October blow mostly west and veer NE with approaching systems.

Direction to shore

NE wind at Jaws Bridge is straight offshore and SW wind at the first bridge is onshore. No full direction-to-shore matrix is confirmed.

Dominant direction

NE is favoured at the Jaws Bridge launch, glassy and the most consistent, with N and NW also workable. SW is used at the first-bridge launch at the north end, but it is onshore, gustier and dirtier there, even though SW is the predominant summer wind. Generic S/SSW/SW-only guidance is unconfirmed for this pond.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

lagoon

Standing depth

Knee to waist deep over most of the pond, which is roughly a quarter of a mile across and two miles long, so there is standing water almost anywhere you would ride.

Tides

The spot is listed as tide independent; the pond is connected to the ocean by two narrow channels.

Temperature

22°C summer · 5°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty or a full suit in summer, a full suit in spring and autumn, a thick suit in winter. September and October likely need only a 3/2; spring water is quite cold.

Currents

No kite-specific current warning is confirmed for the pond interior. Two narrow channels connect it to the ocean, so stay clear of the bridge and inlet traffic and the shellfishing zones.

4–21°C water
Salt pond behind Joseph Sylvia State Beach between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. The pond has very flat protected water and shallow standing areas, but it is narrow and access is constrained by roads, dunes, swim zones, wildlife protection areas, shellfishing and aquaculture.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
All levels are listed, and the shallow, narrow pond does suit learning because nobody gets blown out to sea. Beginners are marked false here: entry is limited to designated points, shellfish and wildlife buffers apply, and NE at Jaws Bridge is offshore, where a rider who cannot hold upwind ends up across the bay waiting to be picked up.

Rescue

No lifeguards on Joseph Sylvia State Beach and no kite rescue; the county line is swim at your own risk. Emergencies are 911, and Dukes County Beach Management is (508) 696-3840, weekdays 08:30-16:30. In NE wind at Jaws Bridge the flow is offshore, so a rider who cannot hold upwind is blown across the bay and has to be collected.

Launch

Designated entry points only, no walking over the dunes, and no driving to the pond shore unless you are actively shellfishing with a permit. In NE the launch is the small beach by Jaws Bridge, where rigging room is tight and parking on the beach is out.In SW the only recommended zone is the first bridge at the north end: park in the lot and walk about 300 yards upwind to the point, then stay up by the point instead of riding back down past the parking lot, because the wind there is onshore and riders have ended up on the road.

Rules & access
  • 2026: kitesurfing within the restricted swim zones off State Beach is strictly prohibited in the summer season, and the designated swimming area is defined as the water within 300 yards of the beach, where motorised craft and anchoring are not allowed. Kites and their operators are prohibited from launching, flying and landing within 200 meters of shorebird nesting, chick-rearing and foraging areas during the nesting season, April 1 to August 31 or until nesting ends, and the roped wildlife protection areas are closed for the same period. Shell fishermen have right of way, and kiteboarders must keep at least 150 feet from shell fishermen, from fishermen operating boats and from aquaculture gear. No vehicle may reach the pond shore unless actively shellfishing with a current permit, and even then it must stay on the dry sand between the dunes and the normal high-tide line, so that access is impossible on some high tides. Kite surfers must use designated entry points; the waterfront and marked trails are for pedestrians only and walking on the dunes is prohibited. Dogs are banned April 1 to August 31, banned 09:00-17:00 through September, and allowed October 1 to March 31. No fires, no charcoal grills, no alcohol on the beach, no overnight sleeping, no canopies larger than 10 by 12 feet, and no bins on the beach, so everything you carry in comes out. Any gathering of more than 50 people needs a permit from the County Manager.
  • 2019: Edgartown selectmen accepted restricted kiteboarding areas and signage for shellfishing areas in Sengekontacket Pond.

Rider tips

  • Check the latest State Beach swim-zone and shorebird closures before you rig.
  • Enter at the designated points only and do not walk over the dunes.
  • Give shell fishermen and the aquaculture gear more than the required 150 feet.
  • At Jaws Bridge in NE wind, the flow is offshore: go only if you can stay upwind and self-rescue.
  • Ask which bridge is working that day, the direction advice changes from one end of the pond to the other.
  • The causeway tops out around three metres, so it is calm where you park while the kites are in 20-plus knots overhead. Judge the wind off the water.
  • There are no toilets at the beach, and in summer a food truck or two in the parking lot is the whole of the catering.

FAQ

Is Sengekontacket Pond suitable for beginners?

No. Although the shallow, narrow pond can help learners avoid being blown out to sea, restricted access, shellfish buffers and wildlife rules mean the spot is rated intermediate and advanced.

What is the wind like?

Recommended direction depends on the exact launch: easterly and southwest wind are both cited for different ends of the pond, with northeast at Jaws Bridge blowing straight offshore.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

As of 2026, kitesurfing is prohibited in restricted summer swim zones off State Beach, riders must stay at least 150 feet from shellfishermen and aquaculture gear, and wildlife protection areas close April 1 through August 31 for bird nesting.

What hazards should riders know about?

Northeast wind at Jaws Bridge blows straight offshore, so riders who cannot stay upwind risk being blown across the bay, while southwest wind at the first bridge can be onshore, gusty and dirty.
