The spot

Getting to Gomati

Gomati is the exposed north-coast wave option on Limnos, under the big dunes near Katalakko. It is a real kite and windsurf beach, but the days it works are strong-Meltemi days: wind onshore to side-onshore, and waves to match.

Ride it in the morning or on a strong forecast, because the heat of the day often shuts the wind down here, and once it goes past about 25 knots the waves get to several meters and the dunes throw gusts.

Access and conditions

Getting there means winding roads and a dirt track from the Keros side, and there is no school and no rescue on the beach, so you are on your own out there. Beginners belong at Keros or Aliki.

The dunes behind the beach are a fragile habitat the municipality highlights, so keep the car and the kite on sand and road.

Typical strength

NE Meltemi from about 22 knots is what makes the bay work; below that it is not worth the drive. Waves build hard above 25 knots and the biggest days run past 30. A purely north wind closes the bay out.

Gusty around the dunes and less reliable in midday heat than Keros/Aliki; strong Meltemi days are the target.

Gomati is the specialist wave option on Limnos rather than the beach the season runs on. Summer Meltemi delivers the strongest sessions, but the morning hours and a strong-Meltemi forecast matter more than the month, and there is a case for calling it a wintertime spot, since summer heat can kill the wind.

Rescue

Nothing on the beach: no club, no lifeguard, no boat. The nearest kite infrastructure is at Keros, roughly 40 minutes away over winding road and rough track, so a bad session here ends with a walk. Ride with someone.

Launch

Wide fine-sand beach below the Gomati dune field, reached by road and then dirt track from the Katalakko area; a 4x4 or a walk in on the last stretch. The launch itself is open with kilometres of bay in front of it, but the dunes throw gusts and the shorebreak is the hard part on a big day.

Equipment

2026: Greek national kitesurf rules require a helmet, harness with hook, a line knife, a buoyancy or impact vest, a quick release with safety leash, kite and board retaining leashes, and a wetsuit between 15 October and 15 May.

Banned conditions and locations

Riding is banned before sunrise and after sunset, on heavily frequented bathing beaches, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, within 1 nautical mile of ports, marinas and fish farms, within 200 m of swimmers and within 200 m of anchored boats, rocks, reefs, islets and buoys, and above 6 Beaufort or in wind pushing riders offshore without a lifeguard and a motorised rescue boat.

A 100 m clear radius is required around the launch, and a kitesurf licence is required.

Treat Gomati as a mission for a specific forecast; Keros is the beach you ride the rest of the week.
Go early or wait for a strong Meltemi day, because daytime heat often weakens the wind here.
Call the Keros or Aliki schools before you drive over, especially about the state of the road and the wave size.
Carry water, tools and enough self-rescue margin to get yourself back; nothing on this beach will help you.
Keep the car and the kite off the dune vegetation.
Check the direction before you commit: NE is the working angle, and a straight north wind closes the bay out.

Route

Fly to LXS or take the ferry to Myrina, then drive toward Katalakko and on to Gomati on the north coast. The last stretch is dirt track and the whole run from the Keros side is around 40 minutes on rough road, so rent a car with clearance.

Base at Keros or Kalliopi for the kite-school infrastructure, in Myrina for town services, or in a village such as Katalakko, Kornos or Kaspakas for a quieter north or west Limnos stay. No kite accommodation at Gomati itself.
