Nissakia is the Agios Nikolaos watersports beach in Artemida/Loutsa, 14 km from Athens airport and close enough to the city that it fills on weekends. The club there has run since 1989 and does lessons, rental and a rescue boat, and the beach counts as one of the better windsurf and kite spots in Greece.
Wind is the north to northeast Meltemi, near-daily from July to September, with March-September the best months; it comes gusty near the sand and steadies out toward the islets. The water splits the same way, shallow and flat inshore and in the lagoon between the small islands, choppier further out.
The awkward part is the reef, which starts at the shore and runs partway out over a bottom of sand, stones and seaweed. Beginners riding on their own have no business here whatever the level tags say, and lessons on the spot are a different matter.
On a Saturday with wind in it this is the busiest kite beach in the region, so sort out your right of way before you launch.

Near-daily wind from July to September, gustier close to the beach and steadier farther out toward the islets. The north wind, the Meltemi, reportedly blows here 150-200 days per year.
March-September are the best months inside a longer March-November season. Loutsa also works on N, NE, S and SW wind, but N and NE are the ones that count.

N-NE is generally side-onshore to sideshore at the Agios Nikolaos/Nissakia shoreline; onshore, offshore and side-offshore are also reported as usable wind types across the broader area.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Shallow water close to shore and a shallow sandy-bottomed lagoon between the small islands; a reef starts from shore and makes entry unsuitable for beginner kiters.

Tides

No tide dependence found. East Attica has the small Mediterranean range, and nothing Nissakia-specific is confirmed.

Temperature

25-27°C summer · 14-16°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer usually boardshorts/rash vest; spring/fall shorty or light full suit; winter full wetsuit. Based on Artemida/Loutsa sea-temperature sources.

15–27°C water
Flat water near shore and around the islets, with choppy water and small waves farther out. The reef creates wave-riding conditions with N, NE, E, S and SE winds; the bottom is a mix of sand, stones, rocky base, seaweed and reef.

Your level

Lessons run here, and the reef and the entry still make it a bad place to learn without someone watching. Intermediate and advanced for anyone riding independently.

Rules & access
2026: A national Ministerial Decision (Government Gazette 4415/B, 7 October 2020) sets Greece's kitesurfing rules, still in force: launch only when the area is clear of people and objects within 100 m, stay at least 200 m from swimmers and 100 m from marker buoys, do not ride before sunrise or after sunset, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, above 6 Beaufort, or in poor visibility or storms, wear a wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May, and have a motorized rescue boat with a qualified supervisor on hand when the wind blows offshore. No Nissakia-specific municipal rule text was found; ask local riders about any additional beach-specific practice before entering the water.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Talk to the club or the locals before your first launch. The reef splits the spot and the entry line matters.
  • Do not use the shallow lagoon between the islets as a beginner zone unless a school is watching.
  • Expect gusts near the beach and cleaner wind once you are out toward the islets.
  • Come on a weekday outside July, August and September if you want room.
  • Bring booties. The entry is stone and rock with seaweed over it.
