On the clock

15:00 · 19:00 · 20:00

About 15:00 until 19:00-20:00.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Oropos is the afternoon-thermal beach on the South Evoikos Gulf, facing Evia, about an hour north of Athens; on the map it shows up as Skala Oropou or Skala Oropou (Halkoutsi), and 'Aliki Oropos' is the same stretch of sand.
The thermal is the whole point: it fills in around 15:00, side-onshore and stable, 11-19 knots, and holds until 19:00-20:00. Sandy beach, no tide to think about, chop and small-to-medium waves once it is blowing.
That stability makes it a progression spot, and that is who it is for; if you want to be overpowered, go elsewhere, and a strong northerly Meltemi kills the thermal outright.
Which months are best depends who you ask: April to June is the most repeated answer, September and October come up too, and it runs as a summer option as well.
There is a shallow lagoon nearby that gets ridden for freestyle, but the open beach is the real spot, and whether the lagoon is permitted or deep enough is unconfirmed. Ask the school on the beach which sandy track is drivable before you follow a generic map pin.

Character

thermal

fills in: About 15:00 until 19:00-20:00.

Typical strength

11-19

Very stable thermal, good for progression; spring and autumn are its best seasons.
April to June comes up most often. March gets added at one edge, September and October at the other, and the beach is also sold as a summer thermal option near Athens, May through September. Whether the shoulder months or high summer are better is unresolved.

The quiver, in words

The thermal asks for big gear. For a 75-85 kg rider: 15-17 m at the 11-13 knot end, 12-13 m around 15 knots, 9-10 m on the rare day it pushes to 19. Indicative, derived from the 11-19 knot range recorded here; no local size chart is published.

Direction to shore

Side-onshore; exact angle varies by launch around Skala Oropou/Aliki.

Dominant direction

SE is the main direction; NE and E thermal setups also occur around Aliki/Oropos.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Spacious and forgiving for progression, with shallow water around Aliki/Oropos; how far out you can stand is unconfirmed.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

Summer August around 25-26.3 C at Skala Oropou/Oropos; nearby Khalkis August average is 26.8 C.

Winter February around 14-14.9 C at Oropos/Skala Oropou; nearby Khalkis February average is 13.6 C.

Wetsuit

Shorts in summer, a shorty in autumn, a thick wetsuit in winter.

14–29°C water
Chop and small to medium waves on a clean sandy beach with no tide to worry about. There is a shallow lagoon nearby as well, but the open sea beach is where the riding happens.

Your level

Any level can ride it, and the school teaches from first lesson upward. Beginners should still take instruction: the water gets choppy and picking the right launch between Aliki and Skala matters.

Rescue

No kite rescue boat and nothing on standby for independent riders. The municipality staffs seven lifeguard points on its busier beaches in the 2026 season, the nearest at Pigadakia Chalkoutsi, daily 10:00 to 18:00 from 1 June, each equipped with a defibrillator, a speedboat, rescue rings, masks and fins, an open line to the municipal ambulance and a link to the coast guard for serious incidents.
The thermal fills around 15:00 and runs to 19:00-20:00, so the second half of a session falls after they go off duty. Oropos port office: 22950 37270.

Launch

Long, wide sandy beach around Skala Oropou/Aliki, side-onshore wind, a medium-size sandy launch with parking beside it. You drive out from Athens.

Hazards riders report 9

  • rough sandy access tracks
  • weekend traffic
  • strong northerly Meltemi can shut down the thermal setup
  • chop and small-to-medium waves
  • possible confusion between the open sea launch and the nearby shallow lagoon
  • summer beach users and parking/traffic from Athens day trips
  • no standing rescue service
  • no rescue boat on standby for independent riders
  • the nearest municipal lifeguard point stands down at 18:00, an hour or two before the thermal does
Rules & access
2026: A national Ministerial Decision (Government Gazette 4415/B, 7 October 2020) sets Greece's kitesurfing rules, still in force: stay at least 200 m from swimmers and 100 m from marker buoys, keep the launch area clear within 100 m, do not ride before sunrise or after sunset, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, above 6 Beaufort, or in poor visibility or storms, wear a wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May, and have a motorized rescue boat with a qualified supervisor on hand whenever the wind blows offshore. No Oropos-specific municipal rule was found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Turn up for 15:00, not the morning; the thermal runs until 19:00-20:00.
  • Ask Kitemonkey or the locals which sandy track to Aliki or Skala is currently drivable before you commit a low car to it.
  • Pack for 11-19 knots, a big kite or a foil, unless a stronger day is in the forecast.
  • Stay on the open sea beach unless a local confirms the shallow lagoon is allowed and deep enough.
  • On weekends leave Athens early; the road and the parking both fill with day-trippers.
  • Keep 200 m from swimmers and 100 m from the buoys; the national rules apply here and there is no rescue boat on standby.
  • Ride with someone. The lifeguard points in the municipality close at 18:00 and the best of the thermal comes after that.
