Liani Ammos is a sandy town beach in Chalkida on Evia, and the Euripus tide runs the place. The water sits close to the road for about six hours, then pulls back several meters for the next six, and the flow reverses with it, so the beach you rig on in the morning is a different beach by evening.
Kiters come because those shallow phases are forgiving, and because it is the north and northwest alternative when Lefkadi has the wrong wind. North is onshore here. Shallow water and Meltemi conditions make it a sound place to learn, and it is close enough to Chalkida and to Athens to be a same-day decision when the forecast turns.
What is not established: typical knots, gustiness, onset time, launch management, rescue, crowd. Swimming quality, signage and cleanliness are reported as poor and the official current status is unconfirmed, so read the beach and any signs before you get in the water.

synoptic

Good for Liani Ammos when the wind is N or NW; detailed steadiness and gust profile unconfirmed.
The Lefkadi and Chalkida area is kiteable on many days from March to mid-October, and Liani Ammos is the N and NW alternative to Lefkadi. On the thermal beaches a few minutes south the wind starts mild in the morning and builds through the late afternoon, running roughly 7 to 20 knots.
The N and NW that switch Liani Ammos on are synoptic instead, so they do not follow that clock.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Very shallow through the phase of the Euripus cycle when the water pushes in toward the road, and the shallow shelf widens again when it withdraws several metres. No measured wading depth has been published for the beach.

Tides

Strong local tidal effect: water lies close to the road for about six hours, then recedes several meters for the next six hours.

Temperature

26.8°C summer · 13.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer usually warm-water gear; winter requires a full wetsuit based on Chalkida/Khalkis sea-temperature averages.

Currents

Euripus tidal flow changes direction roughly every six hours, with a slack period described near the bridge.

Sandy beach over a sandy seabed. The shallow tidal phase is the feature that matters for kiting. Swimming quality and signage are disputed, and no official 2026 rule is published.

Rescue

No rescue service on the beach. The school whose club sat ten minutes south at Lefkadi now marks that club closed and works out of Marmari in south Evia, so its boat is no longer a short call away, and nothing local replaces it. Ride within a self-rescue of the town shore and keep 112 on your phone.

Urban sandy beach launch on the north/east side of Chalkida near the road.

  • Bathing-water history: an Enterococci exceedance closed the beach to swimming in 2020 and no beach-level result has been published since
Rules & access
2026: Greece's national kitesurfing rules still rest on the Ministerial Decision published in Government Gazette 4415/B of 7 October 2020: stay at least 200 m from swimmers and 100 m from marker buoys, keep the launch area clear within 100 m, do not ride before sunrise or after sunset, do not go beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, do not ride above 6 Beaufort or in poor visibility or storms, wear a wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May, and have a motorized rescue boat with a qualified supervisor whenever the wind blows offshore. No Liani Ammos-specific municipal or port-authority kite rule has been published. On the water: a public-health announcement of 20 August 2020 barred swimming at Liani Ammos after an Enterococci exceedance, pending a clean resample, and the regional round of June 2025 reported all 107 Evia bathing beaches sampled within limits without naming individual beaches. Read whatever signs are standing on the sand.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the Euripus tidal phase before you rig, because depth and usable space change through the day.
  • Save this beach for N and NW; Lefkadi is the better-documented option in SE, E, SW and W thermal wind.
  • Look for swimming and water-quality signs on the beach before you go in.
  • Give the road and the town beach users room on the launch, since the sand here is narrow and shared.
  • The club that used to sit ten minutes down the coast at Lefkadi is closed, so plan gear, a lift and your own safety cover before you drive out.
