On the clock

08:00 · 18:00 · 20:30

Wind on most days from 08:00 to 20:30: onshore 08:00-18:00, an offshore phase 18:00-20:30. Other accounts give no onset time and describe only near-daily wind in the main season.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Vravrona Bay is a big shallow sandy bay in East Attica, 20-25 minutes from Athens Airport, with a dedicated launch on Vravrona beach next to the Dolce/Zeus Dolce Athens Riviera hotel that teaches kite, wing, windsurf and SUP off the same patch.
The shallow part runs about 300 x 100 m, flat near the shore, turning to chop, small waves or 0.5-1.5 m swell as you head out. Wind is NE and N, Meltemi with thermal support, mostly 4-7 Beaufort through the May-October season, and it blows on most days from 08:00 to 20:30. It is gusty.
That is the headline nobody leads with: quality is rated 75%, and some days come in extremely gusty. The launch is the other catch, about 25 m of grass plus 25 m of sand over roughly 80 m of beach with trees behind it, so landing on the water is often the sane call.
Onshore runs 08:00-18:00 and an offshore phase is reported from 18:00-20:30, which is the thing to know before an evening session. From June the hotel guests are on the beach and the space tightens, and beginners belong here inside a lesson rather than on their own.

Typical strength

Reports show 4-7 Beaufort in the May-October main season; other reports show Meltemi 5-7 Beaufort with thermal support and upper 3-5 Beaufort thermal wind.

Usable but gusty. Quality is rated 75%, and some days are reportedly extremely gusty.
Main season May-October, best on easterly-north and NE; June-September is also given as the core window. Hotel beach traffic climbs from June.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, derived from the Beaufort bands rather than from a local quiver count: 12-14 m when the thermal only reaches upper Force 3 to Force 4, 9-10 m at Force 5, 7 m at Force 6, 5-6 m on the rare Force 7 top end. Most main-season days sit in the Force 5-6 band, so a 9 m and a 7 m cover the bulk of a week.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Large shallow sandy bay; the shallow section is about 300 x 100 m and is elsewhere described simply as a big, safe shallow bay.

Tides

Vravrona Bay is listed as tide independent; no local tide rule was found.

Temperature

Summer 22.5-25.8 monthly averages Jun-Aug at nearby Porto Rafti/Artemida

Winter 14.7-15.8 monthly averages Dec-Mar at nearby Porto Rafti/Artemida

Wetsuit

Usually no full wetsuit in July-August; shorty or thin wetsuit for spring/autumn or long lessons; full wetsuit in winter.

15–27°C water
Sandy, shallow protected bay with mostly flat water near shore and chop/small waves; swells of about 0.5-1.5 m can develop, with larger swell farther out.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Large, shallow and sandy, which is why it works for learning. It is also rated intermediate to expert, most likely for the gusty wind and the small tree-lined launch. beginner=true is set only for supervised lessons.

Rescue

+30 6944624530

No kite rescue boat is confirmed at the bay. Greek national rules make licensed lifeguards plus a motorised craft compulsory whenever the wind pushes riders towards open sea or blows over 6 Beaufort, so cover on those days depends entirely on the watersports centre being open and staffed; outside its hours there is nothing on the beach. The centre answers on +30 6944624530.

Launch

Dedicated watersports launch at Vravrona beach beside the Dolce/Zeus Dolce Athens Riviera hotel, with about 25 m of grass plus 25 m of sand over roughly 80 m of length; land kites on the water because of trees.

Rules & access
2026: the national kitesurfing rules (Ministerial Decision, Government Gazette 4415/B, 7 October 2020) still govern here and no Vravrona-specific municipal or port-authority rule is on record. Keep 1 nautical mile from ports, marinas and fish farms, reducible to 500 m only where the competent port authority committee allows it. Stay 200 m clear of swimmers, anchored boats, rocks, islets, reefs, buoys and dive markers, and keep every person and object outside a 100 m radius while you launch. No riding before sunrise or after sunset, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, at beaches classed as heavily frequented, or in poor visibility. Above 6 Beaufort, and whenever the wind blows riders towards open sea, licensed lifeguards and a motorised rescue craft must be present. A wetsuit is required from 15 October to 15 May. Carry helmet, harness, line knife, buoyancy impact vest, quick release, and kite and board leashes. Independent riding starts at 16 and requires competent swimming; 14 to 16 needs parental consent plus a supervisor within 100 m, two minors maximum per supervisor. A licensed kite corridor must be at least 100 m long and wide, marked by yellow floating buoys set 3 m apart, cones on the right and cylinders on the left seen from the beach, with a Greek and English kitesurf takeoff sign at each side of the entrance. The same text also bars kiting closer than 200 m to the shoreline, qualified by a note that where swimmer buoys are laid, riding is allowed beyond them.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask at Salty Rides where to rig and where the hotel swimming area starts before you unroll anything.
  • Pick NE or easterly-north days; that is the angle this bay is set up for.
  • Be off the water before the 18:00-20:30 offshore phase unless you have cover.
  • Land on the water when local staff advise it; the trees sit right behind the launch.
  • Stay inside the shallow 300 x 100 m section when the swell is building farther out.
  • Expect the launch to be tight from June onward, when hotel beach traffic climbs.
  • Bring a 9 m and a 7 m for the Meltemi weeks and something around 12 m for the thermal-only days.
  • The safety kit is not optional here: helmet, harness, line knife, impact vest, quick release and leashes are written into the national rules, and a wetsuit is compulsory from 15 October to 15 May.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Vravrona Bay?

The main season runs May to October, with near-daily wind reported from roughly 08:00 to 20:30.

Is Vravrona Bay suitable for beginners?

The shallow, sandy bay is described as good for supervised learning, but the launch is small and tree-lined, so beginners should use school instruction rather than go out independently.

What is the wind like at Vravrona Bay?

A Meltemi with thermal support blows mainly from the northeast and north, onshore to side-shore during the day, and is reported as gusty.

Are there kite schools at Vravrona Bay?

Salty Rides Water Sports and a WSG/Wingsurf Greece partner program operate a dedicated launch and lesson area at the bay.

What hazards should riders know about at Vravrona Bay?

The launch area is small with trees nearby, so water-assisted landing may be safer, and the beach gets busier with hotel guests from June onward.
