Créneau Naturel is the quiet south-west end of Narbonne-Plage, on the road to Gruissan, and it is a plain open Mediterranean beach rather than a lagoon. Two winds.
The Tramontane (Cers, locally) comes from the NW, offshore to side-offshore here, and flattens the water close in; it is also what takes you out to sea if you stop going upwind, and there is no confirmed rescue for kiters on this beach. The Marin from the SE is the onshore sea wind, the one that brings chop and waves.
The Tramontane is reportedly less regular here than at Vieille Nouvelle, which is part of why the Gruissan and Saint-Pierre beaches get most of the kite traffic. The balisage plan gives kites their own zone (zone 5) away from the four swimming zones, and lifeguard post 4 covers this stretch in season.
ZEF CONTROL runs beach and paddle activities from the Créneau Naturel address. Intermediate and up, and read the balisage plan posted at the seafront before you rig.

fills in: The summer sea wind gets an afternoon thermal boost along the Saint-Pierre and Narbonne coast; the hour it fills in here is unconfirmed.

Typical strength

No station on this beach. The nearest long-running coastal station down the shore averages 11 knots over the year with a mean gust of 22 knots and a north-west dominant direction; that is indicative for the Aude coast, not measured at the Créneau Naturel. A working Tramontane here is strong and steady, the south-east sea wind lighter.

A coast with a lot of wind. The Tramontane is strong at Saint-Pierre and Gruissan and reportedly less regular here than at Vieille Nouvelle; the Marin is the sea wind that makes the waves.
Spring through autumn in practice. Saint-Pierre next door runs April-October as its main season and the beach activity bases here work the warmer months; there is no official kite season for Créneau Naturel.

The quiver, in words

Small kites for a strong Tramontane, 12 m and up for the lighter onshore thermal days; that is the Saint-Pierre quiver, and nobody has published one for Créneau itself.

Direction to shore

NW Tramontane is offshore to side-offshore on this coast; SE Marin is onshore to side-onshore.

Dominant direction

NW Tramontane (Cers) and SE Marin; the local names in use are also Nord, Marin, Grec.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Mediterranean open beach: tide does not shape the session at Gruissan or Narbonne next door, and there is no tide note for this beach specifically.

Temperature

22°C summer · 12°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer: shorty or light top in warm water and wind. Winter/off-season: full wetsuit; Narbonne-Plage water temperature drops to around 12-13 C near early March.

12–24°C water
Open Mediterranean sand beach at the south-west end of Narbonne-Plage. On this coast the Tramontane leaves flat water close in and the SE Marin builds small to medium waves; that is documented for Gruissan and Narbonne, not for this exact beach.

Not a beach to learn on alone: the Tramontane is offshore to side-offshore and there is no confirmed rescue. The schools teach in their own zones nearby; whether any of them use Créneau Naturel is unconfirmed.

Rescue

No kite rescue and no club safety boat. Cover comes from the Aude fire-and-rescue service manning the municipal lifeguard posts: post 4, on the Créneau Naturel, is staffed daily 11:00 to 18:30 from 1 July to 31 August 2026. In the 13-30 June and 1-6 September 2026 windows only posts 1 (plage du centre) and 3 (plage du Languedoc) are open, 11:00 to 18:00. Outside those dates and hours the 300 m band is used at your own risk, which covers most of the Tramontane season.

Launch

Beach launch on the wide sand at the Créneau Naturel sector between Narbonne-Plage and Gruissan, near Aquajet / Route de Gruissan and the ZEF CONTROL activity base.

Hazards riders report 10

  • offshore Tramontane
  • requires reliable upwind ability in offshore conditions
  • Offshore or side-offshore Tramontane/Cers can push riders away from shore.
  • Tramontane reportedly less regular here than at nearby Vieille Nouvelle.
  • No dedicated rescue service on record for independent kiters at this exact beach.
  • Summer beach users and lifeguard/bathing zones at Narbonne-Plage.
  • Mediterranean bathing can be dangerous and some Narbonne-Plage areas, especially around dikes, are permanently closed to swimming.
  • No dedicated kite rescue; lifeguard post 4 on this beach is staffed only 1 July to 31 August.
  • From 1 May to 30 September kites are confined to zone 5; the rest of the marked 300 m band is closed to them.
  • Dunes and the ganivelles behind the beach are off limits.
Rules & access
2026 (municipal orders 20260148T and 20260149T, both dated 13 April 2026): aero-towed boards including kitesurf are forbidden from 1 May to 30 September across the whole marked 300 m band except inside zone 5, which is reserved for kitesurfing and where swimming, anchoring and other beach craft are banned.
Zones 1-4 are for bathing and non-motorised activity, zone 0 for dinghies and safety boats. Outside 1 May-30 September riders are on their own responsibility under the national instruction of 2 August 2001. Navigation of beach craft is daytime only and inside the 300 m band.
Beach access is for pedestrians only; a 20 m strip along the waterline is kept clear for walkers; dunes, protected or not, are off limits; camping and sleeping on the beach are banned; fires are banned 1 May-30 October; smoking, vaping and alcohol are banned on all Narbonne-Plage beaches.
Dogs are banned 1 May-30 September except on the marked Créneau Naturel stretch between the Languedoc parking and the Créneau Naturel parking, on a lead. Professional fishing inside the 300 m band is allowed only between 21:00 and 07:00. Lifeguard season 13 June-7 September 2026, with post 4 on this beach open only 1 July-31 August, 11:00-18:30.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the balisage plan posted at the seafront or at lifeguard post 4 before you launch; the kite zone is zone 5.
  • Do not go out in the Tramontane here unless you can hold upwind and self-rescue; it is offshore and nobody is coming to get you.
  • If the Tramontane is patchy here, the beaches at Gruissan and Vieille Nouvelle, or Saint-Pierre, have the steadier wind and the schools.
  • Use the Narbonne-Plage forecast to plan, then trust what the beach shows you.
  • In July and August expect bathers up to the zone limits and lifeguards enforcing them.
  • Pack a small kite for the Tramontane and something 12 m or bigger for the onshore thermal days.
  • From 1 May to 30 September you may only kite inside zone 5; the rest of the marked band is closed to kites and the order is enforced from the rescue posts.
  • Post 4 on this beach is manned only 1 July to 31 August, 11:00 to 18:30; in June and early September the nearest staffed posts are up the beach at the centre and Languedoc.
