Tramontane

10:00 · 12:30 · 14:00 · 19:00

When the Tramontane is not blowing, the onshore wind takes over, and in the afternoon it gets a thermal boost, strengthens and swings more side-shore. The Tramontane itself is synoptic and tends to hold for three, six or nine days at a stretch rather than following a daily clock. The supervised zone runs 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00 on Tramontane days, which is the practical window if you want cover on the water.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Saint-Pierre-la-Mer is a long sandy Mediterranean beach on the Fleury coast near Narbonne, with a marked kite zone next to the Base de loisirs on the Etang de Pissevaches side of the resort. Two winds run the place.
The NW Tramontane blows offshore here, strong and flat, often for days on end; the Marin from the SE and the afternoon southerly thermal come onshore, bring chop and small waves, and bring you back to the beach if something goes wrong.
That difference is the whole safety story: an independent beginner has no business in Tramontane without a boat behind them. The school supervises the zone during Tramontane from 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00, April to October, and sells a seasonal recovery package for around 300 euros (2026). Small kites for the Tramontane, 12 m and up on sea-breeze days.
In July and August the zone is fenced by a channel and signs and the beach is full, so May, June or September gets you the same setup with fewer people on the sand.

fills in: When the Tramontane is not blowing, the onshore wind takes over, and in the afternoon it gets a thermal boost, strengthens and swings more side-shore. The Tramontane itself is synoptic and tends to hold for three, six or nine days at a stretch rather than following a daily clock. The supervised zone runs 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00 on Tramontane days, which is the practical window if you want cover on the water.

Typical strength

The Tramontane commonly runs force 4 to force 8, roughly 11 to 40 knots, so the same beach can be a 12 m day or a 6 m day depending on the week. The summer southerly thermal and the SE Marin are lighter, enough for 12 m and up rather than small kites, and the thermal strengthens through the afternoon. Indicative: converted from the Beaufort range given for the Tramontane, with no measured long-term average found for this beach.

Often windy but direction-dependent: Tramontane can be strong and flat but offshore; Marin/thermal is safer for return to shore and can produce waves.
Rideable roughly April to November, with school supervision and the safety boat covering April to the end of October. Summer is busy and the zone is marked out by a channel and signs. Off-season a wetsuit is normal; in high summer a shorty, or boardshorts and a rash vest, is enough.

thermal and synoptic

The quiver, in words

Small kites in the Tramontane, 12 m and up on the onshore days. For a 75-85 kg rider that lands near 7-9 m on an ordinary Tramontane and 5-6 m when it is at the top of its range, against 12-14 m on the thermal. The small-kite and 12 m-plus brackets are the local rule of thumb; the exact numbers inside them are indicative.

Direction to shore

NW Tramontane is offshore; S/SE sea winds are onshore to side-onshore on the beach.

Dominant direction

NW Tramontane; S thermal; SE/E Marin or Vent d'Espagne

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

A supervised zone with the school's safety boat on it every Tramontane day, 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00, April to the end of October. Access is paid: 25 euros a day, 100 euros for five sessions, 300 euros for the season, 400 euros for the Wednesday junior club (2026). You collect a numbered bib at reception and hand it back afterwards.
Third-party liability cover or a licence covering kitesurf is compulsory to get on the zone, and one can be issued at reception from 26 euros (2026). Outside those hours nobody is watching; at sea the emergency number is 196, and VHF channel 16 reaches the same rescue coordination centre.

Launch

Fitted-out kite area by the Base de loisirs on the étang de Pissevaches side, reserved for kitesurfing and wingfoiling only. It sits inside a Natura 2000 area, so the car stays at the Glisse & Kite centre and you walk in, about five minutes on foot.Changing rooms, showers, parking, wifi and a beach bar are at the centre rather than at the spot, and gear can be watched on the zone over the lunch break.

Space

About 300 m of wide sandy beach with soft sand, kite-only, so no swimmers or sunbathers standing in the launch corridor.

Rules & access
2026: the kite area by the Pissevaches sector is reserved exclusively for kitesurfing and wingfoiling, marked in summer by a channel and signs. Access is paid and conditional: your own gear or a rental, the ability to ride upwind and hold a line among other riders, and third-party liability cover or a licence covering kitesurf, available at reception from 26 euros. Day, five-session and seasonal passes cost 25, 100 and 300 euros, with a Wednesday junior club at 400 euros (2026). The zone is supervised with a safety boat every Tramontane day, 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00, April to the end of October. The site lies inside a Natura 2000 area and is reached on foot from the centre, roughly five minutes. The text of the current annual municipal ordinance is unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the beach to the channel and signs before rigging in summer; the kite zone by the Base de loisirs is the only place you are allowed to launch.
  • Never ride Tramontane alone unless you can hold upwind and self-rescue offshore; the wind is taking you away from the beach.
  • Learning or riding an offshore day, buy the school's safety-boat cover (around 300 euros for the season, 2026) or book a lesson with the boat out.
  • On Marin or thermal days rig 12 m or bigger; on Tramontane bring your smallest kite.
  • The boat only sits on the zone from 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-19:00; outside those hours assume nobody is watching.
  • Sort the paperwork at reception first: liability cover or a licence is compulsory on the zone, from 26 euros, and you pick up a numbered bib there before walking the five minutes in.
