Hel is the town at the tip of the Hel Peninsula, the spit that closes Puck Bay off from the open Baltic. Kite and windsurf activity in the town itself sits at Plaża 66 and Mała Plaża, near the Fokarium and the port, which puts harbour and ferry traffic in the picture.
The bay side of the peninsula is shallow, sandy and flat, and it is where a large share of Poland learns to kite. Wind is synoptic, driven by weather systems rather than a daily thermal, so you plan around a forecast and not around an onset hour.
Summer is the practical window because that is when the schools and the rentals are open; the colder months bring more wind and much colder water. Riders after waves or a proper freestyle flat do better further along the peninsula.
Hel town has thinner spot documentation than Chałupy, so pin the exact launch and the safe wind sectors down with a local school before you rig.

Typical strength

Polish summer lessons run in about 12-30 knots. The nearest station, Hel miasto, shows an 8 kts annual average with W as the average direction.

Wind comes with the weather systems, not with a trade or a daily thermal. The season the schools work is May to September. Autumn, winter and spring are windier and much colder, and runs of twenty windy days back to back happen outside summer.

9-14 m covers a 75-80 kg rider at the Puck Bay and Hel Peninsula spots nearby.

Direction to shore

W is the best direction and comes in side-shore from the left on the bay side. NW, S and SE also work. NE is the one that sends you across to the open Baltic side of the spit.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat/lagoon

Standing depth

On the bay side of the peninsula the lagoon is waist-deep and runs 500 to 1000 m out, so you can stand across most of it. Depth off the Hel town beaches themselves is undocumented and changes from beach to beach.

Tides

micro-tidal Baltic; tide tables for Puck show only centimetre-scale changes and Baltic tides are generally negligible

Temperature

19.6°C summer · 2.8°C winter

Wetsuit

4/3 mm for shoulder conditions on the Hel Peninsula, 3/2 mm or a shorty in July-August, and 5/4 mm with hood, gloves and boots for October-May.

Currents

no tidal current of practical significance documented; wind and pressure can still change water level in the Baltic

3–21°C water
Puck Bay is shallow and sheltered, cut off from the open Baltic by the peninsula. Hel town has bay-side school and rental activity at Plaża 66 and Mała Plaża, but the detailed spot descriptions all cover the wider peninsula and the Chałupy lagoon rather than the town beach.

Your level

beginnerintermediatenot for advanceds here
The shallow Puck Bay side is beginner country. The Hel town beaches themselves have less independent documentation than Chałupy or Jastarnia, and advanced riders find more on the open Baltic wave beaches or the freestyle flats elsewhere on the peninsula.

Plaża 66 and Mała Plaża, near the Fokarium and the port, are the launch and service areas in Hel town; both run as water-sports or kite and windsurf school bases.

Hazards riders report 6

  • Shallow water exposes sandbars at low wind-driven levels
  • Harbour and ferry traffic near the town beach
  • Harbour, marina and ferry traffic near Hel town
  • Wind direction changes around the peninsula can turn a bay-side launch offshore
  • Very shallow water and sandbanks in Puck Bay
  • Cold water outside midsummer

Rider tips

  • Confirm the exact town launch with a school before you rig; the shore angle changes fast at the tip of the peninsula.
  • Book July-August beds months ahead, and take the summer train from Gdynia, Gdańsk or Sopot instead of sitting in weekend traffic on the one road.
  • Carry a full wetsuit even in summer: 4/3 mm is the safe default, and a 3/2 mm or shorty only on a school's word that the water is up.
  • Watch the harbour and ferry movements off the town beaches, and the sandbars that surface when wind pushes the water level down.
  • There is no onset hour here. Read the synoptic chart, pick your day, and accept that a good forecast can collapse when the front passes.
  • If it goes NE, cross the spit to the Baltic side rather than trying to make the bay work.
