The spot

Location and access

Kloster is the flat-water launch on the north side of Ringkøbing Fjord, off Baggersvej on the road between Søndervig and Ringkøbing.

You rig on grass, walk through a narrow gap to the water, and then have standing-depth fjord for about 2 km out over sand and sea grass; the grass is thick enough that windsurfers skip Kloster, which suits the kiters fine.

Wind strength

The wind is frontal and any strength: light in summer, 25+ kt big-air days from autumn to spring.

Wind direction

Which directions work is disputed. The local line is WNW round to ESE, with NW through N to E offshore and gusty; another reading puts SW as best and the southern sector as the rideable arc, and both agree the northern sector is bad.

Tide and water level

There is no tide; the water level is set by the Hvide Sande sluices.

Water temperature and wetsuit

Water is 18.7 C in summer and 2.9 C in winter, so 4/3 from May to October and 5/3 from November to April.

Fishing-net poles stand in the fjord, and parts of Ringkøbing Fjord close seasonally as wildlife reserves under the 2006 order, so check the reserve map before you cross to the far side.

Rescue services

No lifeguard, no club rescue boat and no volunteer sea-rescue station on Ringkøbing Fjord itself. The nearest crewed coastal rescue station is at Hvide Sande, about 15 km south at the fjord mouth, and sea rescue in Denmark is coordinated from the JRCC at Karup; the emergency number is 112.

Practical safety

In practice your cover is the other kiters at the narrow entry and the fact that the water in front of the launch is standing depth for a long way out, so plan for self-rescue and a body-drag back rather than a pickup.

Rig on grass at the Baggersvej access. The rigging area is decent but small, and the way to the water is a narrow gap with other kiters in it. Parking, toilets, picnic tables and a small lunch shelter nearby; the nearest WestWind centres are at Hvide Sande and Bork, not here.

2026: no spot-specific permit at Kloster. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are generally allowed along Danish coasts unless a local restriction applies (national guidance last updated 2020).

Ringkøbing Fjord is a protected area with wildlife reserves, and named reserve zones carry seasonal access and navigation bans under BEK nr 1678 of 11/12/2006, so check the current restriction map before crossing the fjord or riding away from the Kloster launch.

Rig on the grass at the Baggersvej access and keep the narrow entry and exit clear; there is no beach to spread out on.
For a first session pick an onshore or side-onshore day and skip the NW-N-E sector, which is offshore and gusty.
Look for fishing-net poles before you load a jump or run downwind.
Wear 4/3 from May to October and 5/3 from November to April; the fjord is far colder than the air in spring and autumn.
Come early on high-season weekends; parking is limited.
If the direction is wrong for Kloster, try the other fjord launches: Bork Havn, Skaven Strand, Sorte Bakker, Hvide Sande Nord or Hvide Sande Syd.
