When it fills in

There is no daily cycle to wait for. The wind here is North Sea synoptic rather than thermal, so it can be up at dawn, hold through the night or fail all day, and the forecast decides your session, not the clock. What actually times the day on the ground is the supervised window: the school's lookout tower is staffed from the beginning of May to the end of September, and the day pass has to be bought inside campsite reception hours.

Thorsminde sits on Bøvling Klit, the strip of dune between the North Sea and Nissum Fjord, and the kiting happens on the fjord side at Thorsminde Camping. You rig on a big grass meadow and walk into brackish water that is flat, shallow (about 1 m average across the fjord) and free of rocks.
It is a beginner and progression spot first: the VDWS school teaches on the standing-depth area and staffs a lookout tower from the beginning of May to the end of September. The wind is North Sea synoptic, WSW on average, 14 kt with 19 kt gusts over the long-run station record, and WSW is offshore from the west-bank launch.
That is the thing to understand before you go out. The same wind is onshore on the North Sea beach a short walk over the dune, where there are harbour jetties and rips and a heavy shorebreak, and that side is not for a first season. Water is around 18 C in August; bring more neoprene than the calendar suggests.
Access is not free-for-all: the fjord is a bird reserve, kiting is legal only in the marked Thorsminde area from 1 April to 31 October, and non-guests pay DKK 75 for a day pass at reception (2026).

fills in: There is no daily cycle to wait for.

Typical strength

Long-run station average is 14 kt with 19 kt average gusts (observations 2001-10-01 to 2026-07-31). Nobody has published a month-by-month kite range; that the area is windy is the one thing everyone agrees on.

Wind is North Sea synoptic and often strong/gusty rather than a daily thermal. Dominant WSW is offshore from the main west-bank fjord launch but onshore for the North Sea beach, so riders should choose the side and distance from shore according to level and rescue support.
Kiting on Nissum Fjord is limited by the bird-reserve rules to the marked Thorsminde area, spring to autumn (2026 season), and the school runs May-September. There is wind in winter, but the fjord is not open for kiting outside the posted season.

The quiver, in words

No local quiver is published for the fjord. Indicative, from the station average of 14 knots with 19 knot gusts: a 75-85 kg rider covers most days on 9 m, wants 12 m for the 12-15 knot spells of late spring, and drops to 7 m when an autumn depression crosses.Flat shallow water lets you hold a size down on a twin-tip, and a big kite or a foil is what saves the light gaps between systems.

Direction to shore

WSW, the dominant direction, blows off the land at the west-bank campsite launch, so it is offshore to cross-offshore there. NW through NE and SE through SW are the sectors that work on the fjord; due west and due east are limited, by the shallow reserve zone to the north and by fishing nets to the south. The same westerly is straight onshore on the North Sea beach a short walk over the dune.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

mixed

Standing depth

Nissum Fjord is a shallow brackish lagoon with about 1 m average depth and marked shallow training areas at Thorsminde Camping; deepest parts of the fjord are reported around 2.5-3 m.

Tides

The fjord is tide-free and standing depth; its level and salinity are set by the Thorsminde sluice, not by the sea. The North Sea beach has normal tide and swell and is surfed at all tides.

Temperature

18°C summer · 4.5°C winter

Wetsuit

Full wetsuit required year-round for most riders: commonly 4/3 or 5/3 in summer depending on wind chill, with hood/gloves/boots in winter and shoulder seasons.

Currents

No strong current inside the fjord kite area, but the water moves around the harbour and sluice depending on whether the gates are open. On the North Sea side expect rips and strong current, worst near the harbour piers.

4–18°C water
The kite spot is the fjord side at Thorsminde Camping: shallow brackish water, flat to glassy, no rocks. The North Sea beach is a separate option a short walk away, beachbreak waves with harbour jetties and current, and it is for experienced riders.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners use the shallow, flat fjord and local VDWS school support; intermediate and advanced riders use the same lagoon for freeride/freestyle and may cross to the North Sea side for waves. The North Sea side is not beginner terrain when waves, current or pier proximity are present.

Rescue

The school's lookout tower watches the fjord from the beginning of May to the end of September. Outside those months and hours there is no rescue for independent riders; stay inside your own self-rescue range.

Launch

Primary launch is through Thorsminde Camping at Klitrosevej 4 on the west side of Nissum Fjord, with a large grass/meadow rigging area and a small sandy beach by the fjord. Day visitors buy access at reception; overnight guests and school-course guests have access included.

Hazards riders report 9

  • Protected bird-reserve zones and seasonal closures on Nissum Fjord; follow the posted map at the campsite.
  • Dominant WSW wind is offshore from the main fjord launch, so beginners should stay in the supervised/shallow area and avoid drifting into deeper parts.
  • North Sea side can have powerful waves, shorebreak, rips/undertow and strong current.
  • Rocks and harbour jetties on/near the North Sea surf spot.
  • Current near the harbour/sluice varies depending on whether the sluice is open or closed.
  • Cold water and wind chill outside high summer.
  • Fishing nets in the water south of the kite area; they are the reason due-east wind is a limited direction here.
  • Stronger current in the northern part of the fjord, away from the campsite zone.
  • Shore zones that are shallow enough to catch a fin or a foil on the way in.
Rules & access
  • 2026: the campsite kite spot is reached through Thorsminde Camping; day visitors pay DKK 75 per day, overnight guests and Kite-School-Tours course guests have the pass included.
  • 2026: Nissum Fjord is a protected bird reserve and water sports are allowed only in the marked Thorsminde area, 1 April-31 October, the same dates as the 1996 reserve-order exemption for Torsminde and Nørhede. A 1 November end date that circulates is unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig on the meadow at Thorsminde Camping, Klitrosevej 4, and read the spot map at reception before you pump up: the bird-reserve zones and the 1 April-31 October window are enforced.
  • In WSW, the dominant wind, the fjord launch is offshore. First sessions stay in the supervised standing-depth area in front of the school, while the tower is staffed, May to September.
  • Pack a 4/3 or 5/3 even in August; the water is around 18 C and the wind chill on an open fjord is real. Hood plus gloves and boots outside high summer.
  • Treat the North Sea beach as a different spot: rips, jetties by the harbour, heavy shorebreak. Experienced riders only, and keep well clear of the piers.
  • Day visitors pay DKK 75 for the kite pass at reception (2026); course guests and overnight campers have it included. Check reception hours before you drive out.
  • Rent a car at Billund, about 113 km and 1 h 44 min away; public transport is 4 h+ with a change in Holstebro.
