When it fills in

Frontal wind, so there is no daily onset and nothing fills in during the afternoon. It can blow at any hour and holds through the night. Your riding time is set by high water, about two hours either side.

Meldorf has two bodies of water and you can kite on only one of them. The inland Surfsee/Speicherkoog is closed to kites; the Nordseeseite, the seaward side of the Meldorfer Bucht on the German North Sea, is where it happens.
That side is Wadden Sea: a big standing-depth flat around high water, rideable for about two hours before and after high tide, mud after that. Getting in is not beginner-simple. The shore is stone-armoured, a marked flushing field narrows the entry, and the concrete ramp is the only solid way down to the water.
Westerly and northwesterly wind is what you want here; easterly is offshore on the Nordseeseite and worth skipping unless the school is watching you. A blanket Meldorf Speicherkoog kite ban usually refers to the inland lake, not the sea side; read the signs and ask the school before your first launch.

Character

synoptic

fills in: Frontal wind, so there is no daily onset and nothing fills in during the afternoon. It can blow at any hour and holds through the night. Your riding time is set by high water, about two hours either side.

Typical strength

Long-run observations at the Speicherkoog put the year-round average near 10 knots with gusts around 16. Sessions come off the frontal days above that, roughly 15-25 knots. Autumn and winter depressions push well past it.

Open North Sea frontal wind, often stronger than inland. No thermal onset, and a typical knots range is unconfirmed.
Best months unconfirmed. This is synoptic North Sea wind, and the tide window, the water temperature and the storms decide the session more than any named season.

The quiver, in words

Indicative sizing from the local wind record, not from reported quivers: a 75-85 kg rider covers the common 15-18 knot frontal days on 12 m, drops to 9 m from about 22 knots, and takes 7 m when a gale sits over the bay. On the 12-14 knot days it is 15 m or a foil. The tide window is short, so you ride whatever is blowing inside it rather than waiting for your favourite size.

Direction to shore

WSW to W is onshore; NNW and S are more sideshore; ENE/easterly flow is offshore on the North Sea side.

Dominant direction

WSW is the prevailing direction over the year. NW to SW is the working sector on the sea side and NNW comes in almost sideshore; westerly builds disordered wind chop rather than swell, because the water is too shallow for a real North Sea sea. Easterly flow is offshore here and also shadows and shallows the near-shore area.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

tidal flat

Standing depth

The front area holds standing depth even at high water and the bottom firms up farther out. About two hours either side of high water there is enough clearance between fin and mud; on the ebb it quickly gets too shallow to ride.

Tides

Rideable about two hours before and after high tide; outside that window it is tidal Wadden Sea.

Wetsuit

Use a full wetsuit for most sessions; the exposed German North Sea/Wadden coast is cold outside summer and winter requires thick cold-water neoprene.

Currents

Tidal rise and fall is the main water movement. On the ebb there is considerable current on the right-hand side of the sea-side area; no measured figure exists.

4–20°C water
Large Wadden Sea riding area on the seaward side of the Speicherkoog: mostly choppy water, mud/silt near shore and firmer bottom farther out. The spot is highly tide-dependent and access is more technical than the inland lake.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
The wider Meldorf area gets sold as beginner-friendly, but the Nordseeseite has a stone-armoured shore, a concrete ramp for entry, tidal flats and a flushing field to avoid. Ride it on your own only at intermediate level or above; beginners go out with a local school.

Rescue

VHF 16

No lifeguard and no public rescue service on this flat. The local school watches its own booked riders on the water and equips them with radio helmets; independent riders are on their own. The rule locals repeat is that nobody goes out on the North Sea alone.
Help is called by phone from the beach, 112 ashore and VHF 16 for sea rescue, and the surf school or the kiosk is the practical first point of contact.

Launch

Rig on the large parking area behind the dike or on the seaward grass. Gear has to be carried over the dike, and the shore below is stone-armoured: the way into the water is the concrete ramp, plus two breaks in the stone row, and it takes solid kite control. The ground near the dike entry is silty and you sink a little. Sandbars sit several hundred metres out. The marked flushing field north of the harbour mole narrows the entry from the other side.

Hazards riders report 21

  • marked flushing field north of the harbor mole
  • wooden groynes/posts
  • stone-armored shore
  • rapidly falling tidal flats
  • Rideable window limited to about two hours before and after high tide.
  • Rapidly falling water exposes mudflats and can leave too little depth.
  • Stone-armored shore and technical water entry.
  • Access mainly through a concrete ramp.
  • Marked flushing field north of the harbor mole.
  • Wooden groynes, posts or lahnungen around the flushing field.
  • Muddy/silty bottom near shore.
  • Offshore wind risk in easterly directions on the Nordseeseite.
  • Nature-protection restrictions around the Speicherkoog and Meldorfer Bucht.
  • Rapidly falling water exposes mudflats and leaves too little depth under the fin.
  • Marked flushing field for 400 m north of the harbour mole: soft, subsiding ground signed as life-threatening, and closed to kiting.
  • Wooden groynes, posts and lahnungen around the flushing field.
  • Stone-armoured shore; entry only by the concrete ramp or the breaks in the stone row.
  • Muddy, silty bottom near the dike entry where you sink in.
  • Considerable current on the right-hand side of the area on the ebb.
  • Sandbars several hundred metres offshore.
  • Bird sanctuary behind the peninsula and along the reed-lined shore; keep your distance.
Rules & access
2026: kiting is allowed only on the sea side of the Speicherkoog. The inland Surfsee/Speicherbecken is closed to kites, reportedly since 2007, and is left to windsurfers, who have their own buoyed zones there. On the sea side, the 400 m stretch north of the harbour mole is a sludge flushing field where swimming, mudflat walking, windsurfing and kiting are all forbidden and the soft, subsiding ground is signed as life-threatening at high water. Orange buoys mark the nature reserve behind the peninsula and you may not go in behind them. The south side of Meldorfer Bucht is closed, so the north side is the only kite option around Meldorf.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Plan around the local high-water time; the window is about two hours either side and the wind forecast alone will not save the session.
  • Stay off the inland Surfsee/Speicherkoog; kites are only allowed on the sea side.
  • Enter by the concrete ramp and keep away from the marked flushing field and its posts and lahnungen.
  • Skip easterly days on the North Sea side unless Nordseewindsport is watching you; it blows offshore there.
  • Check the current signs with Nordseewindsport before your first launch.
