On the clock

18:00

Lightest at dawn, around 8-9 kt between 05:00 and 07:00. It starts building near 09:00, is worth rigging for by early afternoon, and tops out between 15:00 and 17:00, when March-to-June afternoons average 13 kt. After 18:00 it eases without switching off, and nights hold 9-10 kt. Frontal wind ignores the cycle and can arrive at any hour.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Packery Channel is the flatwater side of Corpus Christi kiting, on the protected back of North Padre Island, and it is a different spot from the Gulf beach at JP Luby. The water is glassy and knee-to-waist-deep over seagrass, so a bad session costs you a walk and nothing else. What costs you is the channel.
It is deep, it carries boats, and you ride the flats behind it, never in it. Booties are not optional here: sharp shells and oyster reefs come up again and again, and the locals know where the reefs sit.
You rig on a small grass launch rather than a beach, with wooden stakes and a power cable to keep track of while you sort lines. March-July are the best months, southeasterlies through spring into mid-summer, cold-front north and northeast wind from October through March.
Beginner is set false despite the shallow water, because the launch, the shells, the stakes and the boat channel are not beginner-proof.

Typical strength

Afternoon wind over the flats averages 12-13 kt from March through June and 8-10 kt from July through December. On a day that works, expect 14-18 kt; the strongest tenth of windy hours sits above 18 kt. Counted in hours, 43% of April and 38% of May reach 12 kt or more, against 15% of August and 18% of December. Three years of hourly readings from the gauge in the channel itself, not a city-centre average.

Very consistent. Strong southeasterlies dominate from spring through mid-summer, and cold-front N/NE wind takes over from October through March.
March-July are the best months; July-October has a bit less wind and can still be good. The season starts around mid-March with north frontal winds and settles into consistent south wind by April through May and early summer.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider a 12 m is the workhorse from March to June, when afternoons measure 12-15 kt. Carry a 14-15 m or a foil for everything else: July to December averages 8-9 kt and most days are under-powered.A 9 m only earns space on a strong front or the top of an April blow, and hours above 18 kt are about 7% of that month. Sizes are worked out from the measured wind, not from a local kite report.

Direction to shore

Cross-offshore in the prevailing E to SE, which supplies more than half of all windy hours: the wind crosses low North Padre Island before it reaches the lagoon flats, and that is what keeps the water glassy. Cold-front N and NNW run roughly along the shore.Read off the layout and the measured direction split rather than a posted local description, so confirm it on the ground before you commit downwind.

Dominant direction

N, NNE, NE, E, ESE and SE are listed for the North Padre / Packery Channel spot.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

shallow flatwater / channel-side flats

Standing depth

Yes. Knee-to-waist-deep flat glassy riding over a seagrass bottom, in shallow flat water protected by North Padre Island.

Tides

Small. Median daily swing at the channel gauge is about 0.15 m and rarely more than 0.21 m, so the tide alone does not transform the flats. Over a year the water level spreads about 0.42 m, which means wind and season move it further than the tide does.High, coming and falling tide remain the good states, and at low water the flats get very shallow.

Temperature

29°C summer · 18°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts through spring, summer and autumn. A wetsuit is reportedly needed only about three winter months, and a 3/2 mm sealed wetsuit may be needed around the coldest early-February water.

Currents

The channel is deep and used for access and boats. Do not ride in it. No current speed has been measured for the flats.

16–31°C water
Flat, shallow water on the sheltered back of North Padre Island, muddy or seagrass bottom with sharp shells and oyster reefs in it. Packery Channel runs alongside, linking Laguna Madre to the Gulf and carrying boats, so the riding area is the flats away from the navigation channel.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
The shallow water forgives, the rest does not: a small grass launch, a power cable, wooden stakes, sharp shells and oysters, and a boat channel next door. Beginners should book a supervised Corpus lesson elsewhere rather than treat this as a safe first launch.

Rescue

No lifeguard and no patrol on the water; this is a day-use county park, not a guarded beach. Depth does most of the work, knee to waist across the riding area, so a failed relaunch is normally a walk.
The exposure is being pushed off the flats in the prevailing E to SE, towards the deep channel and the open Laguna Madre. Ride with someone, carry a phone in a pouch, and use 911. No organised on-water cover at this launch has been confirmed.

Launch

Drive east from Corpus Christi over the JFK Causeway, turn into Packery Channel County / Nature Park near the Route 22 and S Padre Island Drive area, and follow the road to the grassy park launch. You rig on grass, not on a broad sandy beach.

  • Boat traffic in Packery Channel
  • Deep navigation channel; do not ride in the channel
  • Oyster shells and sharp shells; booties strongly recommended

  • Wooden stakes
  • Power cable / power lines near launch
  • Jetskis and other watercraft
  • Very shallow low-tide water
Rules & access
2026: never ride in Packery Channel; ride the flats behind it, and be strict about that in summer when boats pass constantly. Packery Channel Park is at 14218 S. Padre Island Dr., Nueces County; no published kite-specific county permit or ordinance is known.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Never ride in Packery Channel. Use it as an access landmark and stay on the flats away from boat traffic.
  • Wear booties, and ask local riders where the oyster reefs and sharp-shell patches are before you walk out or crash.
  • Watch the tide: low water on the flats gets very shallow. High, coming and falling tide are the good states.
  • Scan for wooden stakes, the power cable and boats before you launch from the grass.
  • Pull current wind readings for North Padre and Packery rather than trusting a Corpus city-centre forecast.
  • Arrive for the afternoon. The wind builds from mid-morning and peaks between 15:00 and 17:00; mornings are usually a wait.
  • In E and SE the land is upwind and the open lagoon is downwind. Work upwind early in the session, not at the end of it.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite Packery Channel?

March through July is the best period, with consistent thermal and frontal wind from spring into midsummer.

Is it suitable for beginners?

The water is shallow and forgiving, but the small grass launch, stakes, a power cable, sharp shells and the adjacent boat channel make it unsuitable for casual independent beginners.

What is the water like?

Flat, shallow, knee-to-waist-deep water with a muddy or seagrass bottom, protected from the Gulf by North Padre Island.

Are there rules or hazards to know about?

As of 2026, riders are told never to ride in the adjacent boat channel and to stay on the flats; oyster shells and stakes near the launch also require caution.
