On the clock

14:00 · 17:00 · 19:00

Barely a thermal at all. The wind here runs at much the same speed day and night; the afternoon lift is about two knots, building from late morning, best between 14:00 and 17:00 and gone by 19:00. From June through August that small lift is most of what there is. Indicative, modelled rather than timed at the beach.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Petoskey State Park gives you about a mile of sandy shoreline on Little Traverse Bay, a semi-sheltered arm of Lake Michigan between Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Clear freshwater, chop, small-to-medium waves, no tide to plan around. The rideable directions run SSW through NW, the wind is thermal, and May through September is the listed season.
A Recreation Passport gets a vehicle through the gate, and two campgrounds sit behind the beach if you want to stay on it. Space is the problem: in summer this is a swimming beach with day-use crowds, and nobody has written down which section of sand is actually accepted for kite launching.
It is rated for any level, which looks optimistic beside the cold water, the currents, the ship traffic and the wave breaker on the hazard list. Bring the neoprene you would want for a Lake Michigan swim in spring or fall.

Character

thermal

fills in: Barely a thermal at all. The wind here runs at much the same speed day and night; the afternoon lift is about two knots, building from late morning, best between 14:00 and 17:00 and gone by 19:00. From June through August that small lift is most of what there is. Indicative, modelled rather than timed at the beach.

Typical strength

Modest, and better outside the summer. October through April the mean runs 8-9 knots with a fifth to a quarter of hours at 12 knots or more. June through August it falls to about 6 knots with under 7% of hours reaching 12. The rule of thumb used for teaching on this lake is 15-20 mph, which is 13-17 knots. Indicative: the monthly figures are modelled on a coarse grid over the bay, with no sensor at the launch on record.

Reportedly steady wind, though no local sensor statistics are published for the launch.
May through September is the season the spot listings give, and it is when the beach is warm and busy. The wind does not agree. Over ten years of modelled hourly data the calmest months at this end of Little Traverse Bay are June, July and August, and the windiest run from October through April.
Spring and autumn buy you wind at the cost of water cold enough to need real neoprene.

The quiver, in words

A 75-85 kg rider will be on a 12 m most sessions, down to a 9 m when a spring or autumn front pushes 20 knots or more through, and up to a 15 m or a foil on the light summer afternoons that make up most of the listed season.Indicative, sized off the wind range rather than from a local report.

Direction to shore

The park beach runs almost straight north-south for about a mile with the bay to the west. Due west is dead onshore. Northwest and southwest are side-onshore, north and south are side-shore, and anything with east in it is offshore and pushes you out into Little Traverse Bay with nothing downwind.Read off the shoreline, since no launch note is posted anywhere.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

18°C summer · 3°C winter

Wetsuit

Cold-water neoprene outside the warm weeks of summer. No month-by-month thickness for this launch is published.

Currents

Currents are listed as a hazard with no description of type or strength. Unconfirmed.

Clear freshwater on Little Traverse Bay: chop most days, small-to-medium waves when it is on. Petoskey State Park is an official state park with about a mile of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline.

Rescue

No lifeguard, patrol or kite-specific cover has been found for the park beach. Emergencies go to 911. The nearest Coast Guard station is at Charlevoix, roughly 30 km down the shore to the southwest, which serves Lake Charlevoix and this stretch of Lake Michigan, so anything that comes for you comes from outside the park.

Launch

Launch off the sandy Petoskey State Park beach, and only where there is real room between you and the swimmers and beach users.

Rules & access
2026: entry by vehicle needs a Michigan Recreation Passport. From 1 January 2026 that is $15 a year on a Michigan plate bought at registration renewal, or $29 for two years; an out-of-state vehicle pays $42 a year or $12 a day. A $5 convenience fee applies if you buy it anywhere other than at plate renewal, and self-registration envelopes are available at many parks. No kiteboarding-specific park rule, launch sector or seasonal restriction has been found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask local riders or park staff before rigging on a busy beach day; the accepted launch sector is not posted anywhere.
  • Keep a big buffer between your lines and the swimmers and walkers on the state park beach.
  • Dress for immersion in Lake Michigan, especially in spring and fall.
  • Buy the Recreation Passport before you drive in, or you are not parking.
  • Treat the listed currents and ship traffic as real hazards even though nobody has measured them.

Getting there
