When it fills in

Frontal rather than thermal, so there is no fill-in hour to plan around. The wind comes and goes with the weather system and can blow at any time of day or night, which is why the strong months are the frontal ones in spring and autumn rather than warm midsummer afternoons. No local daily onset pattern has been recorded.

Point Betsie sits on Lake Michigan north of Frankfort, and riders call the beach there Kite Beach. Clean fresh water with chop and small waves, and a medium beach at the west end of Point Betsie Road that goes from sand to shells, pebbles and stones as you walk in.
Northeast is onshore, southwest is offshore, and because the shoreline curves, the north and south winds turn sideshore farther down. Any direction is reportedly flyable here, which probably reflects the curve of the beach more than any single launch angle; southwest is still the one to think about twice.
Spring and fall are the wind seasons, summer is warm and full of beach users, and the lake gets ridden in winter when it freezes. The beach by Point Betsie Lighthouse is public, but a 2025 Benzie County ordinance covers county-managed sites including the lighthouse, and what it means for launching a kite there is unconfirmed. Nobody has published a normal knot range for this beach.

Frontal lake wind. Any direction is reportedly flyable at Point Betsie, but southwest is offshore and northeast is onshore, and the curved beach makes north and south sideshore farther south. Southwest is the higher-caution direction for a less experienced rider.
Spring and fall carry the wind. Winter riding happens when the lake freezes. Any wind direction is reportedly flyable here.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Wetsuit

Shorts are used in summer, wetsuits are needed in spring and fall, and thick protection is needed in winter.

Clean Lake Michigan water with chop and small waves. The bottom goes from sand to shells, pebbles and stones as it nears the shore.

Listed as beginner, intermediate and expert, but the same record carries both offshore and onshore exposure, so a beginner here still needs a local to read the day.

A decent beach with people around to show the sport to. On summer sunsets the parking can line the road, though there is usually still space.

Rescue

No lifeguards, no patrol and no rescue boat at this road end. The nearest Coast Guard station is at Frankfort, roughly 6 km south at the mouth of the Betsie River; 911 is the number, and Benzie County emergency services answer for the beach itself. The 1875 life-saving station that once stood by the light is long gone.
Nothing here is set up for a kite rescue, which is the thing to weigh on a southwest day, when the wind blows off the beach.

Launch

Launch off the medium sand, pebble and stone beach at the west end of Point Betsie Road, by Point Betsie Lighthouse. Riders call this stretch Kite Beach.

Rules & access
2026 check: no kite-specific rule found. A 2025 Benzie County public-property ordinance applies to county-managed sites including Point Betsie Lighthouse and prohibits dumping, unauthorized fires, smoking or vaping near buildings, marijuana use, noise disturbances, firearms and fireworks discharge, and unauthorized camping.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the launch angle where you actually stand: the beach curve changes how north and south wind hits the shore.
  • Ride with the shell, pebble and stone bottom in mind, fins included.
  • Think twice about a southwest day; that direction is offshore here.
  • Bring neoprene outside midsummer: 17 C in summer, 4 C in winter.

Getting there

Airport

Cherry Capital Airport (TVC), Traverse City; Manistee Blacker Airport is also closer to Frankfort by distance.

Route

Drive M-22, turn onto Point Betsie Road and follow it to the west end. There is road-end parking and carry-in water access less than 50 yards from the car.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite Point Betsie?

Spring and fall, specifically March-May and September-November, plus winter riding when the lake is frozen.

Is it suitable for beginners?

The spot is listed for beginner through expert riders, but the mix of offshore and onshore wind directions still requires local judgment.

What is the wind like?

Northeast is onshore and southwest is offshore; the curved beach means north and south winds become side-shore farther south.

What is the launch and water like?

The beach bottom transitions from sand near the water to shells, pebbles and stones, so fin damage is a listed hazard.
