Tabuba is the open ocean beach between Icarai and Cumbuco, about 1 km before Cumbuco on the road out of Fortaleza, just east of it and therefore upwind, and it rides like an ocean beach: chop, a beach break, small to medium waves and, on swell at low tide, wave ramps you can actually use.
The wind is the same E to SE trade as Cumbuco, 20-25 knots in the main season, side-offshore in the morning and swinging side-onshore around noon; some mornings Tabuba is already working when Cumbuco is still a touch too offshore.
July through December are the months, August and September the strongest at around 25 kt, and the season stretches on to March before it goes patchy from March to June.
The launch is soft sand, and the local rule is simple: rig, launch and ride downwind of the barracas, Barraca Tabuzios and O Costa included, because that is where the swimmers pack in on weekends. Beach width halves from about 100 m at low tide to about 50 m at high. Warm all year, shorts, no wetsuit.
Nobody has confirmed rescue coverage or a municipal kite zone in Caucaia, and the creek channels along the beach are worth a look before you rig.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Not surveyed. This is open Atlantic with a beach break, about 100 m of sand at low tide against 50 m at high, and a wave breaking roughly 200 m out in front of Barraca O Costa. You can wade the shallows at low water, but there is no standing area to learn in and the bottom drops away behind the shorebreak (indicative).

Tides

Low tide is best. The beach is about 100 m wide at low tide and about 50 m at high tide.

Temperature

29°C summer · 27°C winter

Wetsuit

No wetsuit; it is warm all year and shorts are used in all seasons.

27–30°C water
Open sandy beach between Icarai and Cumbuco, with chop, small to medium waves, beach break and wave ramps; wave conditions are better on swell and low tide. Tabuba is a straight beach with strong waves, high dunes and small creek channels.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Listed for beginner, intermediate and expert. The small pushing waves are a soft introduction to wave riding, but this is still open ocean with chop, a beach break and swimmers in front of the barracas. Riding on your own for the first time, stay downwind of the beach bars and skip crowded weekends.

What riders come here for

Less famous than Cumbuco, but kiters use it. The barracas are packed on weekends; the sand downwind of them is usually empty.

Rescue

Nothing documented. No lifeguard post or rescue boat is recorded for Tabuba, and the barracas and the kite operations on the sand are the practical help. Cumbuco, about 1 km downwind, is the only beach in the municipality with Blue Flag certification and the beach services that come with it.
Ride with someone on the sand who can follow you downwind.

Launch

Soft sand. Launch and ride downwind of the barracas, away from Barraca Tabuzios, O Costa and the swimmers in front of them.

Rider tips

  • Rig and launch downwind of the barracas, Barraca Tabuzios and O Costa included; the sand in front of them fills with swimmers on weekends.
  • Come at low tide: better wave shape on the ramps and about 100 m of beach instead of 50 m.
  • Skip the stretch in front of the beach bars on weekends altogether; the downwind sand is usually empty.
  • Bring shorts and sun cream and nothing else; the sun is strongest October-February and the water is warm all year.
  • Give the outside break in front of O Costa a wide berth if you are not riding waves; it stands up about 200 m out.
