The spot

Lagoa do Cauípe is the training lagoon 7-8 km down the beach from Cumbuco: flat, warm at 27-30 C with no wetsuit, mostly shallow enough to stand, and full of schools, freestylers and visiting pros.

Wind and timing

The Alisios blow 15-25 knots from about July through December and usually into January; the wind often comes in strong early, settles around 10:00-11:00 and eases a little at 15:00. August-November/December is the busy window, and by midday in season the lagoon is a kite car park, so ride early or late.

Size and depth

In 2022 the lagoon was dredged and grew from 7 to 19 hectares, and it got deeper; any report older than that describing a puddle is out of date, though the dry-season minimum depth is still unknown and lessons run in about 120 cm.

Etiquette and regulations

The unwritten rule is beginners in the south part and everyone else in the north, and nobody has published whether that is law, a school agreement or etiquette.

The lagoon is inside the APA do Lagamar do Cauípe: no vehicles off the existing tracks, no motorized craft, and leave the dunes and margins alone.

Rescue and transport

There is no rescue on record, so beginners belong with a school. Most riders do it as a downwinder from Cumbuco and book a buggy back; the 2026 going rate for the return is unknown.

Rescue

No organised rescue on the lagoon: no boat, no jetski, no service anyone advertises. Schools cover their own students in the water, and beginner lessons run in about 120 cm where an instructor can stand. Independent riders should plan for self-rescue and a walk or swim to a bank, and pick that bank before they go out.

Launch

Common access/launch is from the western lagoon shore near barracas/kite school activity and from the south-eastern sandbank known as Barra do Cauípe. The spot is commonly reached by buggy/car from Cumbuco or as a 7-8 km downwinder from Cumbuco, with buggy/taxi return.

2026: No current kite-specific permit requirement or municipal kite ordinance is published.

1998 state APA rules for APA do Lagamar do Cauípe prohibit or restrict unlicensed construction, vegetation suppression/fire without SEMACE authorization, pollution or dumping affecting water resources, vehicle traffic outside existing accesses/trails, intervention in APP areas such as lagoon margins and dunes, and motorized craft such as launches/jet-skis except for public-interest purposes.

2026: Informal zoning is reported, with beginners in the south part and other riders in the north, though nothing on record makes it official law.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Cumbuco is about 32.3 km by road and about 36 minutes in a taxi (2026): taxi about R$120-160, pre-booked airport transfer about R$250-320, or the bus at about R$10 taking about 1h56.Allow 45-60 minutes door to door with traffic. From Cumbuco to Cauípe it is 7 km along the beach by buggy or as a downwinder; there is road access too.
