On the clock

15:00

Through the high season the wind is a little stronger from the morning into the early afternoon, holds until about 15:00, then eases away toward sunset. That is the pattern for the whole Cumbuco stretch. Nobody has timed the lagoon itself.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Lagoa do Parnamirim is the freshwater dune lagoon behind Praia da Tabuba in Caucaia; riders call it Lagoa de Tabuba or Lagoa Tabuba, and it sits 7 km upwind of Cumbuco. The water is flat, shallow, dark and a bit muddy, with a sand beach to rig on, and it does not care about the tide.
Wind is the same trade season as the rest of the coast, July through December, at 12-22 knots; nobody has published monthly numbers for the lagoon itself. It is a lessons and freestyle pond, first classes and competition riders training maneuvers on the same water, and quieter than Cauipe, Cumbuco or Taiba. The bottom has sharp shells in places.
The water level moves with the season, and where exactly people rig, whether there is any rescue and who you need to ask for access are all undocumented; go with a Cumbuco or Tabuba operator the first time.

fills in: Through the high season the wind is a little stronger from the morning into the early afternoon, holds until about 15:00, then eases away toward sunset. That is the pattern for the whole Cumbuco stretch. Nobody has timed the lagoon itself.

Typical strength

12-22 knots on the lagoon. On the coast in front of it, 16-26 is the band quoted for the August-to-December peak, with better than a 90 percent chance of usable wind on any given day in that window.

Steady trade wind in season; no monthly statistics exist for the lagoon itself.
Same wind zone as Tabuba and Cumbuco. Tabuba beach is best July-December; nobody has published a month-by-month table for the lagoon.

The quiver, in words

8-9 m, 10-11 m, 12-13 m and 14 m+ all get used across the season; no rider-weight guidance published.

Direction to shore

The mapped water is about 340 m across east to west and 420 m north to south, so with the prevailing east wind there is no side-shore bank: whichever edge you rig on, the wind is straight offshore or straight onshore, and there is no room to drift while you sort yourself out. Which edge riders actually use is not documented.

Dominant direction

East is the main direction, southeast next, then northeast and south. The same trade pattern as the coast in front of it.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Nothing is posted at the lagoon: no lifeguard, no boat, no number on a board. Water rescue in Ceara is run by the state fire brigade, reached on 193, with the ambulance service on 192; whether any of its lifeguard posts sits within reach of this lagoon is unconfirmed.
Going out with a Cumbuco or Tabuba operator is the practical cover.

Hazards riders report 8

  • seasonal water level changes
  • occasional sharp shells on the lagoon bottom
  • dark or muddy water
  • seasonal crowd
  • seasonal water level unconfirmed
  • a large submerged rock in the part of the lagoon nearest the beach, with more rock and sharp shells around it
  • water level that drops if the January-to-June rains were poor, which shrinks the ridable area
  • no rescue and no lifeguard at the lagoon

Rider tips

  • Ask locally about the water level before you drive out for a lagoon-only session; it drops with the season.
  • Wear booties or watch your feet; there are sharp shells on the bottom.
  • Go through a Cumbuco or Tabuba operator the first time; the launch sector is not documented anywhere online.
  • Coming from Fortaleza, take the main coast road and look for the lagoon a few kilometres on, past the Tabuba bridge.
  • How big the lagoon is depends on the January-to-June rains. After a dry first half of the year, expect less water than the photos show.
  • There is a large submerged rock in the part nearest the beach. Ask before you ride that end.
  • The water is only a few hundred metres across, so there is no side-shore bank and no room to drift. Land before you are out of options.
