The spot

Taibinha means two different things. On the map it is the central/western wave section of Praia da Taiba; when kiters say it they usually mean Lagoa Taiba, the flat freshwater lagoon a few kilometers from Taiba village, under 1 m deep, sandy-bottomed and not affected by tide.

Lagoon

The lagoon is the reason to come: it is where the freestyle crowd rides and where beginners take their first lessons.

Ocean and wind

The ocean side at Praia de Taibinha and Morro do Chapeu gives waves, up to about 2.5 m to 3 m in a strong surf, with rocks and reef under them. Wind is the Ceara trade, E to SE, side-onshore, 20-25 knots in the August to November peak and rideable from July into January on anything from a 7 m to a 14 m. There are rocks at Morro do Chapeu, boulders in the lagoon and a wave zone on the east end that is a bad idea below mid-tide.

Schools and access

Schools and pousadas are in place; buses are not, so the lagoon is a car, buggy or mototaxi ride from the village, and the water gets crowded in peak months and during events.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider, 8 m and 11 m cover almost the whole July-January season, and that pair is what most men ride here. Take a 7 m for the strongest August-November afternoons. February-June drops to 10-18 knots, so a 12-14 m is the light-wind answer then (indicative, extrapolated from the season's wind range rather than measured).

Standing depth

Waist-deep over most of the kite lagoon, sandy bottom, under about 1 m, which is why beginners and freestylers use it. It is not uniform: after the December 2025 drowning there the fire brigade's warning was about lagoon bottoms in general, irregular with abrupt drop-offs and internal movement, so do not treat every part of it as standing depth.The level itself moves with the rains and falls through the dry months.

Tides

The kite lagoon sits behind a strip of sand that keeps it separated from the sea, so it does not follow the tide; its level follows rainfall instead, higher after the rains and lower late in the dry season.The ocean side at Taibinha and Morro do Chapeu is tide-sensitive, and the eastern wave section is reported as a bad idea below mid-tide, though the waves are also reported to work there at any tide.

Rescue

No lifeguard post, patrol or paid rescue is confirmed at the kite lagoon or on Taiba beach. Emergencies go to the Ceara fire brigade on 193: they took a bystander call at 09:40 on a Sunday in December 2025 and recovered a 21-year-old who had drowned while bathing on the west side of the kite lagoon.

Available help

The brigade's Surf Salva programme has run free water-rescue courses for surfers and kiters at Praia da Taiba, so in practice the first help on the water is another rider, a school boat or a trained local.

Rules and permits2026: no municipal ordinance, permit, entry fee or marked kite zone for Praia da Taiba or the kite lagoon turned up in the sources searched, and nothing is posted on site as far as can be established.Competition calendarCompetition weeks are the one thing to plan around: Sao Goncalo do Amarante hosted two GKA world cups at Taiba in November 2025 (kite-surf 6-9 November, freestyle 12-15 November) and the 2026 calendar puts a GKA Kite-Surf World Cup at Taiba on 9-14 November, with a freestyle event also announced for the lagoon in late October.In those weeks the beach and the lagoon carry a competition setup, so check with a school before you book.

When you book a lesson or a transfer, say whether you mean Praia de Taibinha (waves) or Lagoa Taiba (the flat lagoon); people use both names.
Learn and freestyle on the lagoon; leave Taibinha and Morro do Chapeu to riders who are fine with rocks, shorebreak and tide timing.
Stay off the eastern wave spot until mid-tide or higher.
Get to the lagoon by car, buggy or mototaxi from the village; it is about 4 km northwest and there is no useful public transport.
Bring cash from Fortaleza; whether Taiba has a working ATM is disputed.
Aim for August to November for the steadiest 20-25 knots; from December the wind tails off and the wave season, October-May, takes over.
Do not read the lagoon as uniformly waist-deep. Someone drowned there in December 2025, and 193 is the number that answers.
If you are travelling in the second week of November, check the GKA calendar first: Taiba is a world cup venue and 9-14 November 2026 is booked.
