Möwennest is the Wadden Sea side of Hörnum at the south end of Sylt, behind the Jugendgästehaus Möwennest. On an easterly the water behind the offshore sandbank goes mirror flat around low water and there are big standing-depth sections; southeast and northeast work too, and anything from the west sector is offshore off the land.
This is a tide window, not an all-day spot: under the Nordsee-Befahrensverordnung the regulated window is three hours before to three hours after low water, and some schools work to a stricter two hours either side. Outside the permission zone kiting and wingsurfing are not allowed, because this is Wadden Sea National Park.
Wear boots; there are oyster beds and shells on the flats and a walk out at low water. Best months are April through October, with June to August the crowded ones on the beach. Parking is short, and parking too close to the Möwennest gets you fined.
Nobody has confirmed rescue cover or a wind average for the launch itself, so treat it as an unsupervised spot.

Character

synoptic

fills in: Frontal wind, so there is no daily onset: it can blow all night and drop at midday. What sets your session time here is the low-water window, not the hour.

Typical strength

Nothing is measured at the launch. The List station at the north end of the island averages 14 knots across the year with WSW dominant, over observations from 2002 to 2026 - an island figure, not a Moewennest one. The east-sector days that make this spot flat are usually the quieter ones.

Frontal/synoptic North Sea island wind; easterly wind over the sandbank is the clean flatwater setup.
April through October is the season. Summer brings more beach users; cold-season sessions need thick neoprene and a fresh check of the zone rules.

The quiver, in words

No local size data; indicative, read off the wind range rather than measured here. For a 75-85 kg rider on the flats: 9-12 m covers most days, 7-8 m when an easterly is properly on, 13-14 m on the marginal east-sector days that are common.

Direction to shore

East-sector wind is onshore to on-side-on at this east-coast Wadden Sea launch; west-sector wind is offshore from land.

Dominant direction

Best with E, SE and NE; N through S sectors are also usable, with main regional wind from SW through NW.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Wadden Sea flatwater / tidal sandbank

Standing depth

Large standing-depth sections form around low water behind the offshore sandbank.

Tides

Best and regulated around low water. The regulated window is three hours before to three hours after low water; some schools hold to two hours either side, with up to three tolerated.Range on Sylt is about 2 m, so the flats appear and disappear quickly and the sandbank you were riding behind is not in the same place two hours later.

Temperature

17°C summer · 4°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts/shorty to normal wetsuit in summer, normal wetsuit in spring/fall and thick wetsuit in winter.

Currents

Tidal current runs on the flats as the Wadden Sea fills and empties, strong in places. It is one more reason the window sits around low water, when the flow is at its slackest.

4–19°C water

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The low-water standing area is where beginners and freestylers go; stronger wind, foiling and the shifting tide keep advanced riders busy too.

Rescue

VHF 16+49 421 53687-0

No lifeguard cover is advertised for this side of Hoernum, and the Wadden flats are not watched. What exists offshore is the volunteer inshore lifeboat Horst Heiner Kneten, 10.1 m, stationed in Hoernum since April 2006 and crewed by ten volunteers; it covers the Wadden Sea between Foehr and the mainland and works with the List and Amrum stations on bigger jobs.
A sea emergency goes to the coastguard on VHF 16, or 70 for DSC, or by phone on +49 421 53687-0; 112 works from the beach. In practice, around low water you self-rescue downwind onto the flats and walk in.

Launch

The surf and kite area is behind the Jugendgästehaus Möwennest on the east coast of Hörnum. Turn left near the Hörnum entrance sign and follow the road toward the allotments and the Jugendaufbauwerk area.

Rules & access
2023/2026: the Wadden Sea kitesurf areas are permission zones and kitesurfing or wingsurfing outside them is not allowed. At Moewennest the regulated window under the Nordsee-Befahrensverordnung is three hours before to three hours after low water; some schools apply a stricter two-hour window.
A bird sanctuary sits immediately north of the area and has to be given at least 150 m, marked by a white buoy at high water. Park only in the marked parking area.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Plan around low water: the regulated window is three hours either side, some schools hold to two, so ask the school which one applies today.
  • Wear boots; oyster beds and shells are exposed on the flats and it is a long walk out at low water.
  • Come on an easterly for the flattest water behind the sandbank; southeast and northeast also work, and west sector is offshore.
  • Park before the restricted end by the Möwennest; parking too close gets fined and spaces are few in summer.
  • From Westerland it is a 15-20 minute drive south to Hörnum; turn left near the Hörnum entrance sign and follow the road toward the allotments.
