When it fills in

Maestrale is synoptic and can be blowing at any hour, overnight included. The diurnal part is the spring and summer thermal on top of it, which builds through the afternoon on clear days and reportedly adds up to about ten knots over the forecast. No hour-by-hour record exists for this beach.

Torre Grande is the serviced wind-sports beach of the Gulf of Oristano: a broad sandy bay with a sandy bottom, sheltered enough to forgive mistakes. The dominant wind is north-west Maestrale, commonly 20-25 knots and reinforced by spring and summer thermals; Scirocco from the southeast turns up less often but works.
Wind character is sideshore, with usable directions SE, N, NW, W. Beginners and improvers are the natural fit, because the beach is broad and the schools are on it. Advanced riders use it for stronger-wind freeride or slalom, or as a base for the exposed Sinis wave spots at Funtana Meiga and Capo Mannu.
What is not established: where the standing-depth teaching water actually sits, whether there is a kite-specific summer corridor, and whether anybody covers rescue for independent riders. In bathing season the 5 m strip from the waterline has to stay clear, and the swim zones are marked.

Typical strength

5-10 knots is the minimum working threshold, with 20-40 knots at the top of the range; the dominant NW commonly blows up to 20-25 knots.

Sheltered and forgiving by Gulf of Oristano standards. NW days get reinforced by spring and summer thermal effects; SE days are less frequent but usable.
Best months are March, April, May, June, July, plus November and December. Spring and summer add thermal reinforcement on the NW days.

The quiver, in words

No local size data; indicative, read off the wind range rather than measured here. For a 75-85 kg rider: 7-9 m on a normal 20-25 knot Maestrale, 5-6 m when it goes over 30, 11-12 m on the 12-15 knot days and on the lighter Scirocco. Under about 10 knots it is a foil day.

Direction to shore

Wind character is sideshore, with usable directions SE, N, NW, W. Direction-to-shore by individual beach section has not been mapped.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Tide is not a factor here. The Sardinian swing is a couple of tens of centimetres - a Cagliari day in 2026 ran from 0.06 m to 0.25 m - and there is no gauge inside the Gulf of Oristano. Wind and pressure move the water level more than the clock does.Regional figure, no local measurement.

Temperature

25.3°C summer · 14.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer is generally shorts or shorty conditions; spring and autumn need a shorty or normal wetsuit, and winter needs a normal to thick wetsuit.

Hazards riders report 4

  • summer swimmers and marked bathing areas
  • keep the 5 m shoreline transit strip clear under Sardinia/Oristano beach rules
  • avoid occupying launch corridors or swimmer areas contrary to posted signs
  • strong Maestrale days can reach 20-25 knots or more
Rules & access
2026: Sardinia's regional bathing ordinance defines the beach-season framework and requires respect for local maritime-authority and municipal rules; it also requires the 5 m strip from the waterline to remain free for transit and regulates launch/landing corridors. Torre Grande's municipal beach-rule page, updated in 2025 from a 2020 notice, says individual water sports including surf, windsurf and kitesurf are allowed when distancing and the 5 m battigia strip are respected.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask the beach schools before you rig in bathing season; the swimmer zones and beach-use rules decide where you can set up.
  • Plan on NW Maestrale as the working direction; SE Scirocco days happen but are rarer.
  • Keep the 5 m strip above the waterline clear and leave no gear in a launch or bathing corridor.
  • For flat water or freestyle, go to Stagno di Mistras instead of the open bay.
  • Use Torre Grande as the easy base and take on Funtana Meiga or Capo Mannu only when your level matches the waves.
  • Expect the Maestrale to overdeliver on bright spring and summer afternoons: the thermal stacks on top of the forecast.
  • Do not plan around a tide window; there is barely any tide, and it is the wind and the pressure that set the water level.
