Gold auf Fehmarn sits at the Orther Reede on the south-west side of the island, and it is Fehmarn's shallow-water classroom: a big sandy standing area, mostly hip deep, with the kite zone marked about 200 m to the right of the windsurf spot along the dike.
Southwest, west and northwest are the winds that work; southwest is sideshore from the left, pure east is offshore, and the rest of the west sector comes in onshore to side-on. In north or light SW-NW wind the inside is glassy.
From about 20 kt of west or southwest the deeper water outside the standing area turns to chop with small ramps, which is what the freestylers wait for. It is crowded. From May to September the water is full of lessons, windsurfers, freeriders and demo days, and on a good west-wind day launch space and line space run out early.
Watch for sea grass and very shallow patches in SW wind, the stone-reinforced dike, a poorly marked short mole to the left, two boulders near the small island, and the nature-protection rule from the end of 2006 that keeps you out of the water in front of and between the two small islands.
March to November is the season most people ride, though no Gold-specific wind statistics have been published; summer is the warm, busy school season, with water about 17 C, down to 4 C in winter.

Character

synoptic

fills in: Frontal wind with no daily cycle: it runs day and night with the weather system, so the forecast and the crowd decide the session, not the hour. A light summer high can add a few knots of sea breeze in the afternoon. No local hourly record.

Typical strength

From about 20 knots of west or southwest the deeper water outside the standing area builds chop and ramps around 1 m; below that the inside stays flat and the standing area is the whole point. No station at the spot, so no measured range.

Direction dependent, cleanest in west-sector frontal Baltic wind. Pure east is straight offshore; strong west or southwest builds chop in the deeper water.
Fehmarn is ridden year-round and has a spot for every direction, but Gold-specific best months are unconfirmed. Summer is the busiest and warmest school season.

Thermal or synoptic

frontal / synoptic

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider, 12 m on a 15-18 knot day, 9 m from about 20 knots when the chop and the small ramps build outside the standing area, 7 m in a hard west-sector front. Summer highs bring plenty of 14-17 m or foil days. Indicative, derived from Baltic wind figures rather than a measurement at Gold.

Direction to shore

SW is sideshore from the left; west-sector winds are generally onshore to side-on for the south-west Fehmarn shore; pure east is offshore.

Dominant direction

SW, W and NW are the directions to come for; best conditions are in west winds, with SW sideshore from the left.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Baltic Sea lagoon / shallow flatwater

Standing depth

Large standing-depth area: the kite zone is mostly hip deep over fine sand and standing depth throughout.

Tides

No tide dependence at Gold; this is a Baltic/Orther Reede spot with wind-driven water level more relevant than astronomical tide.

Temperature

17°C summer · 4°C winter

Wetsuit

A wetsuit for most of the season, with neoprene socks in spring and autumn; Fehmarn water averages about 17 C in summer and 4 C in winter.

4–20°C water
Flat to light chop in the shallow Orther Reede, calmest in north or lighter SW-NW wind. In stronger west or southwest wind the deeper water farther out gets choppy with small ramps. Sea grass and very shallow patches, especially in SW wind.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The big shallow sandy standing area is why schools teach here and improvers come back. Advanced riders use it for freestyle, freeride and small jumps when stronger west-sector wind puts ramps in the deeper part.

Rescue

No lifeguard station and no standby rescue boat at the kite zone. In practice the cover is the schools watching their own students in the shallow section and whoever else is on the water; the island's volunteer water-rescue association runs a motor rescue boat but staffs events rather than this beach. Nothing formal was confirmed for independent riders.

Launch

Park in the large paid car park with public toilets, then walk 300-400 m: about 200 m to the water and another 200 m right past the windsurf area to the kite zone on the dike. Launch on the sandy beach on the dike side. The launch and landing strip itself is narrow, so rig, launch and move out of the way; a pedestrian and cycle path runs immediately behind it.

Hazards riders report 15

  • shallow water
  • busy water on good west-wind days
  • separation from windsurfing area required
  • Very shallow water and sea grass, especially in SW wind.
  • Busy water and crowded beach/lines during the season.
  • Pure east wind is offshore.
  • Kite zone must be kept separate from windsurfing area.
  • Stone-reinforced dike/shore near the kite spot.
  • Poorly marked short mole left of the spot.
  • Two boulders near the small island in the kite area.
  • Nature-protection zone around the small islands; do not ride in front of or between them.
  • Large stones in the water to the north toward the protected area, shallow enough to catch a board at low water.
  • Narrow launch and landing strip that congests in good conditions.
  • Pedestrian and cycle path directly behind the beach, in reach of kites and lines.
  • Holes in the deeper water out between Gold and Orth.
Rules & access
  • 2026: kiters walk past the windsurfing area to the separate kite zone and stay in it during the season. Since the end of 2006 a nature-protection restriction bans riding directly in front of the two small islands or between them.
  • 2026: the town's watersport rules require users to keep to the permitted kite and surf areas and to stay out of breeding and ecologically sensitive areas, and mobile surf and kite schools must register with the town administration before operating.
  • 2026: the car park at the spot is paid, around EUR 2 a day for a car and EUR 3 for a bus.

Rider tips

  • Park in the big paid car park with the toilets and keep the shore road clear; it is about 200 m to the water and another 200 m right to the kite zone.
  • Walk right past the windsurf area before you launch; the kite zone starts beyond it.
  • Stay out of the water in front of and between the two small islands; that has been a nature-protection area since the end of 2006.
  • Arrive early on summer west-wind days, before the launch and line space is gone.
  • Pack neoprene socks in spring and autumn; the bottom is fine sand but the water is cold.
  • In SW wind watch the very shallow patches and the sea grass on the inside.
  • Fit a weed fin. Sea grass on the inside is the standard complaint here, and it is worse in southwest wind.
  • Land, pack and clear the strip. The launch area is narrow and there is a cycle path right behind it.
  • Nobody is watching the water. Ride with someone who will notice you are gone.
  • Keep north of the kite zone in mind at low water: there are big stones in there toward the protected area.

FAQ

Is Gold auf Fehmarn suitable for beginners?

Yes, the large hip-deep, sandy standing-depth area at Orther Reede is one of Fehmarn's main teaching spots for beginners and improvers, and it also draws advanced freestylers in stronger wind.

What is the wind like?

Southwest, west and northwest are the most consistently recommended directions, with southwest arriving sideshore; pure east wind is offshore.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Kiters use a separate marked kite zone reached by walking past the windsurfing area, and a rule dating to 2006 forbids riding directly in front of or between the two small islands offshore.

When is the best time to kite here?

The season runs from March through November, with the water busiest and warmest from May to September.

What are the main hazards?

Very shallow water and sea grass are common, especially in southwest wind, and the spot gets crowded with schools and freeriders on good west-wind days.
