Freeriding is advertised from 4 Bft, roughly 11-16 kt. Monthly means run 6.4-8.5 kt at the sheltered lagoon station and 9.3-12.5 kt at exposed Staberhuk, lowest June to August and highest December to February. Autumn and winter fronts are a different animal: documented island sessions have run at 40-57 kt.

Primary access is from Camping- und Ferienpark Wulfener Hals and its water-sports station on the Burger Binnensee side, with day parking/meadow parking outside the campsite.A narrow sandy headland separates the lagoon from the Baltic side; kites may need to be launched/landed from the beach, and access to the Baltic side can require using the campsite or carrying gear across the headland.

Rules
- 2026: Burger Binnensee at Wulfener Hals is closed to independent kiters from April to October between 10:00 and 18:00; free kiting runs 18:00 to 10:00 and daytime use is only possible inside a kite course.
- 2026: the same rule is also written as a toleration, kiting at Wulfen allowed only in the evening or by prior arrangement with the surf school.
- 2026: kiting and surfing are prohibited inside the marked bathing zones.
- 2026: three areas at this spot are to be avoided for bird protection, the eastern water and shore of Burger Binnensee including the island Kohlhof, the north-western water and shore with its two small peninsulas, and the water, shore and dune belt of the eastern spit of the Wulfener Hals headland; signs and an information leaflet mark them on site.
- 2026: mobile surf and kite schools must register with the city administration at Bahnhofstr. 5 in Burg.
- 2026: whether the daytime lagoon rule is a ban, a school-only rule or a permit system is still unsettled, so confirm at the Windsurfing Wulfen station before rigging.

Rider tips
- In season the lagoon is an evening spot for independent riders: plan the session for after 18:00, or book into a course and ride the middle of the day.
- Confirm the current 2026 time window with Windsurfing Wulfen or the signage on site before you rig on Burger Binnensee.
- Southeast is the direction people travel here for; east in general works well, and west tends to be gusty and pulls water out of the lagoon.
- Watch for the buoy-marked stones, the unmarked hard spots and the extreme shallows that follow a run of westerly wind.
- There is no lifeguard here; the guarded beaches nearby are Burgtiefe and Meeschendorf.
- Arrive early on summer weekends and holidays for the paid day parking, and keep a car: the yellow Gelbe Planke waymarking runs to Gold, Gollendorf, Lemkenhafen and Grüner Brink when the direction does not suit Wulfen.
Getting there
Airport
Lubeck (LBC) is the closest airport; Hamburg (HAM) is the main international gateway people actually use for Fehmarn.
Route
By car from Hamburg take the A1 toward Lubeck/Heiligenhafen, continue on B207/E47 over the Fehmarnsund Bridge, take the first exit after the bridge, then follow Avendorf/Wulfen and Wulfener Hals Weg to the campsite.Public transport is possible via Hamburg/Hamburg Hbf toward Fehmarn-Burg or Burg auf Fehmarn with onward local transport, but a car is the practical choice for kites and spot-hopping.
Transfer
About 90-120 minutes by car from Hamburg in normal traffic; train and bus combinations from Hamburg Airport to Burg auf Fehmarn run around 3.5-4.75 hours depending on route.
