The spot

Isla Blanca Park, The Jetty to anyone who rides it, is the Gulf-side wave launch at the south tip of South Padre Island, right beside Brazos Santiago Pass. S and SE are the working directions, and the surf runs from flat-to-waist-high up to shoulder or overhead-plus on the bigger days.

Who rides here

This is not where you learn on SPI. The Laguna Madre flats are, and they are waist deep; The Jetty is for intermediates and up who can handle surf, swimmers, granite and 2.8 kt of flood current setting into the pass.

Wind and conditions

April is the strongest month, averaging 14.4 kt through the afternoon with 42% of those hours at 15 kt or more, and October is the weakest at 8.5 kt. Winter is still the better wave season even though the wind numbers are lower.

Facilities and timing

The park itself is developed: parking, restrooms, showers, camping, with county day access rising from $12 to $15 on October 1, 2026. Summer runs hot and crowded, and often light on the Gulf side, so the trips worth booking are spring and the winter fronts.

Not a standing-depth learner spot; use the Laguna Madre/South Flats for ankle-to-waist-deep flat water. At Isla Blanca the riding is Gulf surf from a sandy beach/jetty with variable nearshore sandbars.

Currents

The pass is the hazard, and it is a measured one. Predicted flow at the entrance to Brazos Santiago Pass runs to about 2.8 kt on the flood, setting roughly west into the pass, and about 2 kt on the ebb, setting roughly east out to sea; a typical month has four turns a day and slack lasts minutes.On the open beach add rip currents. Downwind drift toward the jetty and the channel is the thing to plan against before launching, not after.

Conditions

Day to day it swings from flat-to-waist-high, where a first ocean session is survivable, to shoulder-to-overhead-plus, where it is not.

Wind swell is the normal fare on an exposed beach break beside a jetty, and winter delivers the cleanest of it.

Foil and wing work when the surf is small, though the sandbars and the pass want you paying attention.

Lessons above the intro level run with waverunner and radio support, which is instruction cover rather than a service open to independent riders.

Treat self-rescue, a partner and a realistic downwind plan as the actual safety system.

Launch off the Gulf-side sand inside Isla Blanca Park, near the south jetty and Brazos Santiago Pass. Pick a stretch that is actually open, keep the kite away from beachgoers and from anyone in the water, and leave the hard riding for outside the shorebreak.

2026: kiteboarding is open on SPI ocean beaches with no formal launch or riding restriction, and the price of that is behaviour: no launching in a crowd, no flying over people, no riding through swimmers or surfers, and the ocean beaches treated as experienced-rider water.

2026: beach rules ban glass, littering, commercial activity and solicitation, require pets on a leash, carry fines up to $2,000 in 2026 if convicted, and clear shade devices off the sand between 10pm and 9am; overnight camping is banned on City Beach Access, while Isla Blanca is a Cameron County park and campground.

Rider tips

S and SE are the directions. Look at the surf from the beach before you commit on a big day.
Learn on the Laguna Madre flats or the South Flats. Come to The Jetty when you specifically want Gulf surf.
North-wind downwinders start elsewhere on the island, not here.
Rig only where the beach is open enough to keep your lines and your kite well away from people.
Do not ride through swimmers or surfers. That single habit is the reason these beaches are still open to kites.
Check the tide and the parking before you leave a vehicle anywhere near the waterline.
Pack light-wind gear as well as small kites for the fall and winter fronts; both soft days and 35 mph turn up.

Getting there

Airport

Brownsville/South Padre Island International (BRO) is the closest, about 30 minutes from the island. Valley International (HRL) is 55 minutes and McAllen (MFE) about 1.5 hours.

Route

Drive in on State Highway 100 over the Queen Isabella Causeway. Rental cars, taxis, private transfers and shuttles all run from the nearby airports, but a car is what carries kite gear and gets you to the other SPI launches.
