When it fills in
Afternoon for the summer S/SW sea breeze/thermal when it occurs.
The wind
locals call it Marin SE and summer S/SW thermal; avoid Tramontane here
Direction
Character
mixed
fills in: Afternoon for the summer S/SW sea breeze/thermal when it occurs.
Typical strength
No usable measurement for the spot. The station that once sat on this shore averaged 8 knots with 10-knot gusts between 2012 and 2018 and has stopped reporting, and that was an all-hours average rather than a riding figure. A sensor now sits out in the middle of the lagoon, in the corridor between the Conque de Mèze and the Sète lido, and its live reading is the number worth checking before you drive.
Direction to shore
The south-facing north-shore launch is onshore in S/SE/SW and offshore in NW/N/NE.

SE, S, SW

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water
Type
lagoon
Standing depth
Shallow sandbanks are used for teaching and wing/kite practice; the navigable Etang de Thau averages about 4-5 m outside the shallow banks.
Tides
Mediterranean lagoon; normal kitesurfing is not meaningfully tide-dependent.
Temperature
21.5°C summer · 12.7°C winter
Wetsuit
Summer: shorty or light suit depending on wind and duration; winter: full wetsuit. Boots recommended because of stones, shells and shallow bottom.
Currents
No current in the learning area; on the wider lagoon you still steer around the shellfish-farming concessions and the other users.

Launch
North-shore lagoon launch at La Pinede, just past Meze village: a mixed pebble-and-sand beach with a large, quiet lagoon-side car park behind it and a few trees between the two. Access to that car park is through two concrete blocks set 2.20 m apart, with no height limit. Ganivelles run along the shore.Schools use a boat to reach the better parts of the lagoon depending on the wind.

Rules & access
Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.
Rider tips
- Come for Marin SE or the afternoon S/SW thermal; in Tramontane go to Pont-Levis or Maldormir, it is offshore at La Pinede.
- Wear boots: stones and shells on the bottom, and it is shallow enough to hit them.
- Keep out of the oyster tables and the marked concessions; ride only in the kite zone.
- When no school is on the water you will be self-launching on a small beach; bring a helper or know how to do it alone.
- Check the lagoon sensor before you drive: it sits out in the middle of the water, between the Conque de Meze and the Sete lido, and reads closer to what you will get than a coastal forecast point.
- Stay inside the protected water behind the sandbank if you want the flat; step outside it and you are in chop.
Getting there
Airport
Montpellier-Mediterranee (MPL); Beziers Cap d'Agde (BZR) is also close.
Route
Meze is on the north side of the Etang de Thau. Access is easiest by car from Montpellier, Beziers or Sete; local buses serve Meze but a vehicle is more practical with kite gear.

Staying
Meze has quieter village/lagoon accommodation; Sete, Marseillan and Balaruc add more hotels, rentals and campsites around the lagoon.
No-wind days
Meze village, Bouzigues oysters, Sete, Thau lagoon beaches, the Musee de la Prehistoire, cycling/walking and paddle/kayak in calm weather.

FAQ
When is the best time to kite at La Pinède?
March to May and September to October are the cited best months, though local school activity runs March through November.
Is La Pinède suitable for beginners?
Yes, the wide sandbanks are used for teaching because there is no significant current and no obstacles for first kite handling.
What is the wind like?
South-sector wind works best, including SE Marin and an afternoon S/SW summer thermal; NW Tramontane is offshore here, so riders usually go elsewhere for that wind.
What hazards should I know about?
Stones, shells and shallow patches sit on the bottom, and riders should keep clear of nearby oyster-farming concessions.
Are there kite schools nearby?
Fil d'Air and ID Kite both teach on the Meze side of the Etang de Thau.
