When it fills in

Scirocco and Bora are synoptic and can run at any hour, through the night included, so there is no fill-in time to wait for on those days. Summer is different: the working easterly in June to August is largely a sea breeze that builds through the afternoon and falls away near sunset. Indicative, from the regional pattern and the nearest station's summer mean direction, not from a measurement at the beach.

Milano Marittima is a working kite beach inside Cervia's coastline, not a stretch of sand you improvise on. Kitesurf and windsurf go out in three places: beside Porto Canale on the Milano Marittima side at Via Leoncavallo, along the I Traversa canalino, and near the boundary with Lido di Savio.
The water is Adriatic sand, flat behind the rocky jetty when the wind is southerly, chop and small to medium waves the rest of the time, and the tide plays no part in any of it.
Scirocco runs 10-20 kt from April to September; Bora fills the other months at 20-30 kt, and the strong months are January, March and December.
Summer gives you the warmest sea and the fullest beach, so in June, July and August you are riding around bathers, and the 2026 Emilia-Romagna ordinance keeps the first 300 m from shore for bathing except in authorized corridors. Intermediates and up ride here comfortably; nothing confirms it as a beginner teaching beach.
Sort out which of the three areas is currently usable before you rig, because none of them comes with published corridor boundaries or season dates.

Typical strength

Scirocco 10-20 kt from April to September, Bora 20-30 kt in the other months.

January, March and December are the strong months and the rest are ok. Character is mixed: thermal on some days, Scirocco or Bora on others.
Scirocco covers April to September, Bora the other months. The beach is packed with tourists in summer.

The quiver, in words

No local record. Converting the wind bands the beach is described on, a 75-85 kg rider is on 12 m at the bottom of a 10-20 kt Scirocco and 9 m at the top of it, and on 8 m down to 6 m in a 20-30 kt winter Bora. Derived from those bands, not from riders here.

Direction to shore

The Cervia beach faces almost due east, with the sand running roughly north-south and bending to NNW-SSE. Bora from the north-east and a plain easterly Levante come straight in; Scirocco from the south-east is side-onshore and leaves flat water in the lee of the harbour jetty to the south; Libeccio from the south-west and Maestrale from the north-west blow off the land; north and south sit close to pure side-shore. Derived from the coastline orientation rather than from a local posting.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Lifeguards are on the concession beaches through the bathing period, which the 2026 Emilia-Romagna ordinance sets from the third weekend of May to the third weekend of September, with cover required at least from 09:30 to 18:30 without a break, and beach clubs open only for sunbathing must fly a red flag and post that there is no rescue service.
The municipal line is to ask the lifeguard on your stretch what is currently allowed. Outside those months and hours there is nobody. At sea the number is 1530, the coastguard's free emergency line, or 112.

Launch

Kitesurf and windsurf are practised beside Porto Canale on the Milano Marittima side at Via Leoncavallo, along the Milano Marittima canal at I Traversa, and near the Lido di Savio boundary.

Space

Big sandy beach, packed with tourists in summer.

Hazards riders report 5

  • harbour/canal traffic near Porto Canale
  • Mole/rocky jetty near the harbour mouth
  • Other beach users, especially in June, July and August
  • Harbour/canal traffic near Porto Canale
  • Bathing is prohibited within 150 m of regional port entrances under the 2026 Emilia-Romagna beach ordinance
Rules & access
2026: the local practice areas for kitesurf and windsurf are the Porto Canale on the Milano Marittima side at Via Leoncavallo, the I Traversa canalino area, and the stretch near the Lido di Savio boundary, with no corridor boundaries, season dates or independent-access terms published for any of them. Under the 2026 Emilia-Romagna beach ordinance the first 300 m from the shoreline between the Po di Goro mouth and Cattolica is reserved for bathing and marked with a line of red, orange or white buoys; out to 500 m from shore, crossing under sail or motor is allowed only inside a landing corridor authorised by the comune. A licence to run a sailing, windsurf or kitesurf school is issued by the comune only once that corridor authorisation exists, and the holder has to be entered in a municipal register. Bathing is banned inside the corridors, in ports, within 150 m of a regional port entrance, near breakwaters and within 100 m of seawalls under construction, and within 50 m of outfall pipes and of river mouths. Beach establishments must be open and running a rescue service from the third weekend of May to the third weekend of September, at least 09:30 to 18:30.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Confirm on the day which of the three Cervia areas is open; the boundaries are not published anywhere.
  • Give the Porto Canale mouth and the rocky mole a wide berth going out and coming in.
  • Ride well downwind of the packed sections in June, July and August, and land where there is nobody.
  • Bring a 3 mm shorty outside May to September, and 3-5 mm for a winter Bora day.

Getting there

Airport

Rimini (RMI) about 45 km; Bologna (BLQ) about 115 km; Venice Marco Polo (VCE) about 175 km.

Route

Cervia sits between Ravenna and Rimini. From town, go just north of the small harbour channel.

Staying

Milano Marittima is a built-up seaside resort, so beds, food and bars are all within walking distance of the beach.

No-wind days

Hydrofoil and the usual beach-water activities fill a light day; otherwise the Cervia salt pans.
