When it fills in

Not thermally driven, so there is no daily clock. A Bora or Scirocco event runs through the day and can hold overnight. On calm summer days a modest sea breeze fills in during the afternoon, and afternoons are the most reliable window across the year.

Circolo Nautico Cattolica is a sailing club with a kite programme attached, not a kite beach. It has been running for over 30 years on Cattolica's north beach, right where the Canale Ventena empties out beside Parco Le Navi, and it teaches kitesurf alongside sailing, windsurf and SUP from 1 May to 15 October.
A single one-hour water lesson was €50 in 2026, individually or in a small group, children included. Wind numbers here are close to useless: the long-run stations at Cattolica and Riccione average 3-4 kt over the year, and both have stopped reporting, so the real count of rideable days is unknown.
What riders along this coast go by is simpler, once the wind pushes past about 15 kt and the beach umbrellas start coming down, people go out. The catch is the water, because close-set breakwaters run along this stretch and clear riding starts only outside them.
The club beach also holds boat storage, courts and more than a hundred moorings, so space at the waterline is tight. No corridor document names this club; what applies is the 2026 Emilia-Romagna regional bathing ordinance, which confines any kite crossing within 500 m of shore to a municipality-authorized landing corridor, runs beach-establishment activity from the Saturday before Easter to 2 November 2026, and sets mandatory lifeguard cover from 16 May to 20 September 2026.

fills in: Not thermally driven, so there is no daily clock. A Bora or Scirocco event runs through the day and can hold overnight. On calm summer days a modest sea breeze fills in during the afternoon, and afternoons are the most reliable window across the year.

Typical strength

The long-run stations at Cattolica and Riccione average 3-4 kt over the year, but both are inactive, so those figures understate the usable days. The working local threshold is about 15 kt, the point where beach umbrellas start coming down.

The kitesurf lesson season runs 1 May-15 October. That is the club's operating calendar, not a wind season.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, no local report: for 75-85 kg a 12 m covers the 15-18 kt days that actually get people off the beach, a 9 m the 20-25 kt Bora and Scirocco events, and it takes a 15 m or a foil to turn a summer sea breeze into a session.

Direction to shore

The beach faces north-east. Bora comes straight onshore. Levante from the east and Scirocco from the south-east run side-onshore along the sand. Garbino and Ponente blow off the land, and there is nothing downwind of you when they do.

Dominant direction

No single dominant direction. Rideable days come from gradient events: Bora out of the north-east, Scirocco out of the south-east, occasional straight Levante from the east. Garbino and Ponente, from the south-west and west, are the offshore ones.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat

Standing depth

Sand bottom that shelves very slowly. Along this stretch it is a long wade before the water reaches your waist, which is forgiving for a lesson and tedious for anything else. Indicative for the coast, not measured at the club frontage.

Tides

Adriatic micro-tide, semidiurnal, mean range about 34 cm. It does not shape a session here.

Temperature

28°C summer · 9°C winter

The club frontage sits directly on the Canale Ventena outlet. This stretch of coast is lined with tightly-packed breakwaters, with clear riding water starting only beyond them, though that is a description of the wider Romagna coast and is not confirmed as club-specific.

Rescue

No club rescue boat is advertised. The cover on this beach is the municipal lifeguard service: one Italian Swimming Federation lifeguard per 150 m of shorefront, on duty 09:30-18:30 with the service suspended 13:00-14:00 and a red flag up while it is, working from towers and red rescue boats, with a 500 m bathing zone marked by white buoys.
Outside those hours and outside the season there is nobody. At sea, call 1530, the free Numero Blu. The local coastguard office in Cattolica is 0541 963221 and the Rimini port captaincy is 0541 50121, staffed around the clock.

Launch

You launch from the club's own north-beach frontage, beside the mouth of the Canale Ventena and Parco Le Navi. Along this stretch of coast real riding generally starts only beyond a line of tightly-packed breakwaters close to shore.

Space

Hazards riders report 9

  • nearby canal entrance
  • Canale Ventena canal mouth and its boat traffic right next to the launch
  • Close-set breakwaters along this stretch of coast, which restrict clear riding water close to shore
  • Shared club beach with boat storage, courts and over a hundred moorings
  • riding near river and canal outlets is barred outright, and the Ventena empties in front of the club
  • a 100 m no-go band around breakwaters and coastal-defence works
  • offshore Garbino and Ponente from the south-west and west, with no safe landing downwind
  • very slow-shelving sand, so a long wade before waist depth
  • gusty wind close in behind the built-up seafront
Rules & access
Kiting on this coast is governed by the Rimini maritime district regulation, issued as Capitaneria di Porto di Rimini ordinance 33 of 16 May 2022, which covers Cattolica. Daylight hours only and settled weather.
No riding within 1,000 m of the district's harbour entrances, within 100 m of breakwaters and coastal-defence works, within 500 m of fixed installations, set nets or anchored ships, within 200 m of navigation marks or diver-down floats, beyond one nautical mile from shore, or near river and canal mouths and any water closed to bathing — which is what makes the Canale Ventena outlet in front of the club a legal problem and not just a hazard.
Minimum age 16. A buoyancy aid and a cycling-type helmet must be worn throughout, the kite must carry a release that lets you get off it, and you must carry a line cutter. Lines are connected only at launch and disconnected on landing, and a kite left unattended must have one side disconnected and the lines wound on the bar.
Where navigation is barred inside 500 m of the shoreline, launching and landing must go through an authorized corridor: 30 m wide at the water's edge, opening to 80 m by 100 m out and holding that width to the 500 m limit, marked by orange buoys no more than 20 m apart with white flags on the outermost ones.
You body-drag the first 100 m, one kite in the corridor at a time, riders coming in have right of way. The corridor needs municipal authorization, and no document naming one in front of Circolo Nautico Cattolica was found.
Season framing on this coast for 2026: beach-establishment activity from the Saturday before Easter to 2 November, mandatory lifeguard cover 16 May to 20 September.

Rider tips

  • Write to info@cncattolica.it before you drive: nothing about the launch arrangement is published, and the club runs the beach.
  • Book lessons straight with the club. A single one-hour water lesson was €50 in 2026.
  • Come between 1 May and 15 October; outside those dates the kite programme is not running.
  • Plan on riding outside the line of close-set breakwaters, not on the strip inside them.
  • Keep clear of the Canale Ventena mouth next to the launch; boats use it.
